Even though I'm a southerner true-and through, I don't care for anything Confederate for what I feel are obvious reasons (JUST MY OPINION). That said, these guys have a right to sport what ever they want weather it be authentically reconstructed, or wishful thinking dress up. We ALL should know by now that Americans can become fanciful in their highland dress. I for one do everything wrong as far as protocol in Highland Dress, but I enjoy myself and thats the point. If you feel like dressing up half highland/half Confederate, just do it if thats what you want. You surely won't look as absurd as that one pic that was posted here on the forum sometime ago of the gent with 1/4 formal, 1/4 jacobite, 1/4 day and 1/4 brave heart....Now that was even beyond me!

The jacket and kilt co-ordinate much better and the neckwear is period-looking (unlike a lace jabot).

The sporran is still anachronistic. 1860s sporrans were usually goathair, and the style of the period was for the bottom to end in a somewhat scraggly way. Cutting a horsehair sporran straight across the bottom (as seen above) didn't come into fashion until the late 20th century.

Here's the sporran I usually wear. The body would be quite period-looking however the cast cantle is somewhat anachronistic.

Here's a period-looking cantle, seen on the upper right. Were I to attend a Civil War type function in Highland Dress I would stick the cantle on the upper right onto the goat sporran body and Bob's Your Uncle! It would look like it was right out of the 1860s.

Just to throw a little more gas on the fire.....why would a Confederate Cavalry Officer wear a kilt in the first place??? I do like that outfit though!!

This image was originally posted by me and I apologized for throwing it together. The point was to show the appropriate accessories (shirt, tie, waistcoat) to make the outfit more correct for the period.

I only used the cavalry officer's jacket because it was the only image I could find that was arranged and accessorized appropriately to use in the mock-up. That seemed pretty clear to me, but if I didn't state it clearly enough for you to understand that I apologize.

I thought you felt this whole conversation beneath you, Scott. No lost opportunity for a snipe, eh? And here I thought you were a gentleman.

Awesome. Does this forum have an "ignore this person" option? Some of the attitudes here, particularly by the farbs are deplorable.

Not having any idea about the term Farbs I thought I would post a definition for any others in the same boat

Farb is a derogatory term used in the hobby of historical reenacting in reference to participants who exhibit indifference to historical authenticity, either from a material-cultural standpoint or in action. It can also refer to the inauthentic materials used by those reenactors.
