I had smoked beaver. It was a little on the rich side, being pretty fatty, even after being smoked. I have to imagine that being prepared "fresh" and not de-fatted in any way would make it pretty bad. The stuff I ate didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste particularly good. I'd eat it again, but not as a choice when there's too much filet mignon floating around.

Oh lordy.....I made the mistake of reading this entire wretched (or is it retching?) thread while eating lunch.

I'm sure some will be snickering in their fried crocodile brains and earthworm stew but I try NOT to eat so called weird things.

My one 'weird' thing is chicken livers - preferably fried. Other than that I eat white meat chicken, beef (steaks, roasts and ground sirloin - no brains, tales or hoofs) , pork (as in chops and bacon) and very limited sheep. That's it for the meat unless you count what you get in a Big Mac. I guess you would not call me an adventurous eater.

It seems I have led a pretty sheltered life as far as food is concerned.
Perhaps the strangest thing I have eaten (at any rate, going by the reactions of the guys who were near me at the mess) was a soup produced by army cooks that had something in it that resembled a male organ in shape. Didn’t taste bad, though.
And as a youngster I once enjoyed a rock lobster (or kreef, as it is known in South Africa), eating both the white meat and a brown substance which I was told afterwards was its fæces. It wasn’t bad, and it didn’t give me indigestion of any kind.
I haven’t eaten crow, but I did once eat a sparrow I had shot (my mother put it in the oven for me).
I love eating liver, tongue and kidneys, but I have not tried brains, testicles or tripe.
I did get indigestion from eating sulphurated apricots (the sulphur is applied in the form of smoke, and its ill effects are removed by the fruit’s being sun-dried – I should have waited a day or two!).
And I got a terrible tummy ache from drinking grape must that had been unrefrigerated for a little bit too long.
Many folk from other countries think we South Africans are crazy for eating biltong – but I gather that jerky (basically the same thing) is widely regarded as a delicacy in the western US, and pemmican in the frozen north.
My favourite varieties of biltong are ostrich and kudu. Both need to be very dry. I am not at all keen on the beef biltong favoured by folk from the old Transvaal, which is generally wet and looks bloody.
    Regards,
    Mike

I'm sure it's little other than strange meat. "Beef" can come from any part of a cow...

I've had rocky mountain oysters. They weren't bad but everytime I bit into one, the thought of the juices and why they were juicy really took a toll on me. Rattle snake doesn't taste like "chicken" and a steer tongue isn't bad on a charcoal grill.
