Outting with the neice...
Saturday was my brother-in-laws graduation with a BA. All my wife's family came in to make a party of it. At one point my wife and I were going to run and pick up the balloons. We told everyone we would be right back and one of my other sister-in-laws asked if her daughter could go with us and pick up a card. So off the 3 of us went to the store. My neice is 15 and like most believed she had seen and done it all at her age and knew what was best and worked. Well, life is different with Uncle Richard around!
We all talked and caught up on school and friends and her life in the country. My wife is good with kids and especially the kids in the family. I'm an only child of an only child with no kids so sometimes I am at a loss as to what to say. We walked into the local hobby store and ordered the balloons and walked around for about 10 minutes. My wife went off on some treasure hunt of her own and my niece and I walked and just looked around. At one point she turned to me and said "Did you know that you attract a lot of attention?" I just turned to her and said "Yes." She turned to me again and said "Most people would not like that." I responded "I'm not most people, I wear a kilt." She responded "I noticed that." and we continued to walk until the balloons were ready.
I felt at that moment no explanations were ask for and none were given. I got the feeling that she realized that I did not fit her view of the world and she was not quite sure how to deal with that. For now I guess I'm the 'crazy uncle' that wears the kilt!
Well, guess I'm off now to shake up someone else's view of the world...got to have some other hobby besides collecting kilts!

Great story, Richard!
On November 13th my 18 year old niece saw me in my kilt for the first time at a family dinner. She didn't say much at the time, but I was chatting with her online a few days ago and she asked about it. She thought it was pretty cool, and she mentioned that she, her mom, and her aunt talked about it a bit on the way home. She said they were all jealous because they though my legs looked better than theirs!
