Sorry, but I would not waste my money on this. I'd wait a little longer and then put the price of this "Ancient Kilt" towards buying a genuine kilt.
You did ask what we thought!

"ancient" kilt...
I saw a gent wearing something similar to this at a Burns Night last night, and it did not look good, especially for a "formal" function like a Burns Supper. He wore it with one of the ubiquitous "Jacobite" shirts, combat boots and a black military beret with a clan badge. He looked very out-of-place among the formal attire.
What worries me more is that they are using "Braveheart" to market this item, since "Braveheart" was inaccurate in regards to a Lowlander of Norman heritage (Wallace) wearing a kilt (he didn't!)
My advice, for what's it's worth, save your money.

Seems like everyone is of the same mind on this one. I'll just add that, despite the name, no kilt like this was ever worn historically by the Scots. Seems to be a style made up for Braveheart!

My understanding is that they just wanted to use some of the general public's ignorance of Scotish dress. People liked the look of the inauthentic kilts in Braveheart. The producers just said "to h--- w/ it," and used the kilts anyway. The blue face paint had been out of use by Celtic cultures for nearly 800 years by that point, too. Didn't stop the producers and costume designers. Thank God they didn't win the Oscar for costume design.

John Ford syndrome...

Basically Hollywood has a bad case of "John Ford Syndrome" -- "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
Now, don't me wrong -- Director John "Pappy" Ford is one of my favourite movie directors ("The Quiet Man", "How Green Was my Valley", etc.), but Hollywood has taken this mantra and ran with it -- at least Ford attempted to get things right as far as costumes, etc.
Hollywood always sacrifices historical truth for "guts and glory" -- and before someone says, "but it's just a movie", remember that many in the audience have a limited knowledge of history, have read very few historical books, and gain much of their knowledge from what they see on the screen. I remember standing in line for "Titanic" (urgh..."A Night to Remember" is far better, save the Gaelic Storm scenes!) and hearing someone say -- "I wonder what happens to the Titanic?" no joke.

Cheers,

When Titanic came out a neighbor was raving about it. Kept insisting I just HAD to see it. I told her "I already know how it ends. The boat sinks"
