Laid to rest in The Kilt

‘Rubber Souls’ post regarding wearing the Kilt to a funeral reminded me of my Grandfather and his last wishes regarding his funeral arrangements.

Like all good Scots, he wanted the best deal and shopped around for his own funeral home, casket, plot, etc., many years before he passed away. He wanted to not only assure himself that he could rest in eternity knowing he got a good deal, but also that the family would not be burdened by the funeral arrangements and such when the time did finally arrive for him to called home.

In his instructions for burial, he specifically requested that he be laid out and buried in Kilt and full regalia. He actually had written instructions that included the line "I may not be recognized should I meet my maker in trousers, and I would loathe the thought of being erroneously taken for one of His lesser creations; an Englishman."

We did indeed lay him out as requested, and I am sure he was warmly welcomed as a Scotsman.

I have actually talked to people who have grappled with this decision.

Do you get buried in your kilt, honoring your heritage with your final wishes....

Or do you leave your kilt to be inherited by future generations of your family?

    Aye,
    Matt

Since I have given instructions that I wish to be cremated, there is no way any of my kilts are to be burned with me. The coffin/casket is to be of cardboard and there will be no singing of hymns - but there will be a piper!

If my wishes are not carried out to the letter, I'll be back to haunt those responsible!

That's a great story, and very funny you mention it, because I was just thinking earlier today if people ever get buried in kilts! Rather odd for this post to come up!

    buried in a kilt...

This thread reminded me of an article I read several years ago about a "new" tartan being discovered in a grave in Texas:

    VERY cool article Cajunscot.
I just KILLS me to think of all the kilts
and big brooches and dirks and such just rotting
in the ground. It's a crime really. Bloody well just
bury me naked. You truly can't "take it with you".
