Aloha Shirts with Kilts

Spring is creeping up. Time to figure out Spring fashion.

I love my Aloha shirts, have about 40 of them. They're perfect for the heat of the high desert and canyonlands.

Always wore them with pants before. Now looking at how they do with my solid color kilts.

Wearing an Aloha shirt tucked into a kilt defeats the purpose of the loose fitting shirt. But, wearing the Aloha shirt loose hides a lot of the kilt and, to me, leaves sort of a tu-tu skirt look peaking out.

Wearing the Aloha shirt out and unbuttoned shows off the kilt, and my chest tattoos, but I would guess most would focus on my Buddha belly and gag.

Any fashion advice appreciated here...

My goal is to stay cool and comfortable without causing visual discomfort to those around me...

Hi Ron,

I am not entirely sure exactly what an "Aloha" shirt is. Is it perhaps what I would call a Hawaiian shirt: all jazzy, bright colours with large, bold patterns, even pictures of Palm trees and sandy shores?

OK, assuming that it is: firstly, I'd say that it's probably something you can wear, but only with a plain or solid-colour kilt - NEVER a tartan or any other patterned kilt! Secondly, to make it even more acceptable, the kilt should match one of the predominant colours in the shirt. It's like the question of what colour shirt to wear with a tartan kilt - but reversed.

As for wearing the shirt outside of the kilt, I'm not so sure. I don't think it works but it might - I'd need to try it for myself! Of course, conditions are rather different in Arizona to those here in northern Europe, but my shirt preference for hot weather is the short-sleeved Polo shirt. This is a pull-on-over-the-head shirt commonly worn here in the summer, but I know I could never wear that untucked. As you say, wearing the shirt outside the kilt, visibly shortens the latter and, I think, presents a rather 'girly' appearance. On the whole, I would recommend tucking the shirt in ........ unless you are on the beach maybe!

Since you wear your kilts all the time, and don't just wear them to Festivals or Celtic gatherings, you're free to do whatever. Nice position to be in!

I have a very good friend that wears UtiliKilts and AmeriKilts with his patterned shirts. He used to tuck them in, but it made him look rather goofy. It just really didn't work.

He too started to wear another whirt underneath, and just use the patterned shirts like a smock.

We try to coordinate our tartans to our shirts and hose. You'll just get to do it with t-shirts, wife-beaters and your prints.

I'm gonna try this with my UtiliKilts this summer while I'm at home. If I go out without the scally and boots... I'll catch all kinds of h_ll.

Jimmy Buffet fans, or Parrot Heads as they are known, have been known to wear the shirts with kilts all the time. The style can be full of "clash" and really look bizarre as a rule, I have seen some that can and do pull it off.

Ain't THAT the truth Glen? Have I ever mentioned that I am a LONG TIME parrot Head? The minute I turned forty, I put on the Jimmy Buffett CD and listened to the song, "A Pirate Looks At 40".

I started thinking about the shirts with the kilt... and it's really not different that a pair of shorts in this case. Kilt, sporran, hose and boots with the shirts would look AWEFUL. Kilt, sandals, and the shirts would be bearable.

I MUST agree with The King of Fashion & Common Sense... I mean Hamish. The UtiliKilts and Pittsburgh Kilts would be nice. A tartan would have you looking like you're in need of "telethon" funds.

Today was Denver's St Patrick's Day Parade and one of the entrants was the Parrot Head Club of Denver. They were playing those tunes all along the parade route, and several of the members were kilted. All wore Utilikilts it looked like and were wearing the colorful shirts that they are known for. And yes Hamish, all but one of them had them tucked in, it was great!

I've worn a kilt with a Hawaiian shirt a time or two. Always a solid color kilt, and I wore it with sandals -- no hose. I wore the shirt tucked in, but loosely, so it still hung loose on me, while at the same time not hiding the kilt.

People always got a smile seeing the combo...
