    G-8 Tartan

The STA's web site is reporting the launch of a new tartan in honour of the G-8 summit, designed by the STA's own Brian Wilton:

Quite like the look of that - not too traditional but not too modern either. I envy the design skills. I once tried to use a tartan generator and never managed to get a finished product, so to do it andhave the sort of thought that has gone into it is impressive by my standards

What a neat looking tartan 8)

Like the lines, and agree with Phil not too much either way.

How does one go about designing tartans? Or at least get an idea about it.

Granted the computer image usually looks different than real life... That said it's not a bad looking tartan, not one I would wear but not bad at all.

I got started just by noticing what it is I like about certain tartans, and playing around with colour combinations and various patterns of thread-counts (i.e., the width of the different coloured stripes) to get a feel for the results. But each tartan I design is unique. Usually there's some connection to certain places, armorial bearings, etc. that relate to the commission, and those things can serve as inspiration for aspects of the design.

I wouldn't say it's easy -- I think it's the sort of thing some people have a knack for. But you can learn a lot by reading about tartan and studying pictures of lots and lots of tartans! It's fun and satisfying, to me, like most creative activities.

There's a fun little free tartan generator at http://www.weddslist.com/cgi-bin/tar...ce=misc#result .

Oh, please! Raphael, not even Tony Blair in a kilt would make the man acceptable!
