Welsh heritage
So, I have a Welsh surname, my grandfather adopted it during WWII for various reasons, namely, he was a german speaking Austrian in the british army, being sent into occupied france, and had he been captured with an Austrian name, we would likely have been killed on the spot. So, I'm curious if there are any welsh tartans (be they familial or regional, my surname is Wynne), or if someone could tell me more about "Welsh kilts". Thanks in advance!!

If you want to find out about Welsh tartans check out www.welsh-tartan.comjust e-mail them and they can help you find out about your family tartans. I used their site to find out if my family had a tartan. My family hails from Wales but our name isn't Welsh, (no tartan for my family, oh well). Good luck in your search.

Keep in mind in your search that all these Welsh tartans are very new. The first Welsh tartan was a national tartan for all of Wales designed in the 1960s. And for a long time that stood alone.
Within the past few years, there has been a move to make the tartan in Wales more popular, and Welsh family tartans have been designed -- not by the families themselves, but by companies marketing them.
Not that I'm saying you can't or shouldn't wear them. I just don't want people to assume these are old, traditional designs, when in fact they are new fashions.
Historically, the Welsh never had a "family tartan system" so this is something quite new.
Aye,
Matt

Chris, a member of the forum, has one of the best websites about the Welsh cilt. Definitely worth checking out for the information. He's also got a links page with North American dealers.

just a random thought, this could have taken a vastly dramatic turn in subject by transposing a single letter in the word cilt. LOL!
