I thought I would share something that happened to me a several years ago. It was my first interaction with a kilted Irishman, and proud at that.
I was at a local pub in texas, this place was PROUD irish, they didn't even serve domestic beers. so I was hanging out with my friends enjoying a pint of the dark stuff when I saw a fellow in the corner wearing a green kilt and strumming a guitar! I hadn't found the joy of kilts yet. I went and began talking to him, when one of my friends made a crack like "What's with the skirt?"
Without even looking up from the neck of his guitar he said "Lad, this guitar will sound just as good break'n o'er yer hed as it does be'in played, so I suggest you sit your **** down and have another whiskey."

I decided he had to be the national mascot of Ireland out travelling the US. Had to share that. Easily the best response to the "skirt" comment!
Happy Tartan Day!
