    Shirts for Kilts

Anyone have ideas for alternate shirt wear for kilts? I am new to the whole kilt wearing thing (in fact my kilt is on order with the celtic craft center and about 1/2 month late ).

Anyway, I have seen the jacobian shirt thing too many times and it seems to only work well for renaissance fairs and scottish events. So what do you do if you want to wear your kilt hiking, skiing or working? I saw the rugby shirt idea, but there are no pockets.

Any new shirt ideas would be appreciated.

Click on the galleries link at the top of the page, and start looking through them. You'll see a wide spectrum of possibilities.

I tend to like solid colored shirts with the kilt, as patterned shirts can be too busy when combined with the tartan. The exception to this is silk screened tee shirts which is fine for pubbing or bumming around. But at the office, I wear solid colors up top. I try to match the color of my shirt to one of the lesser used color in the tartan to help pull that color out. If I'm feeling particularly gawdy I've been known to wear a yellow fleece sweater with the Royal Stewart tartan but that's not recommended unless you are feeling like a complete outright attention whore.

I generally find myself wearing a collared shirt. For dress, I'll wear just a regular buttoned-up and collared white shirt, but I've also got a black polo style shirt with only the two buttons up top that I wear often. Sometimes, I just wear a t-shirt. It really depends on what you'll be doing.

Those are just some suggestions there. I'd also like to reiterate what Magnus said about patterned shirts. Solid colors (that match your tartan, if it's a traditional) work best.

Magnus has got it in one! Solid colours work best with tartan kilts every time. T-shirts and Polos are ideal for leisure wear.

I don't want (necessarily!) to keep promoting my 'other' Photo Album , but it contains somewhere around 90 images of my Kilt Kollection and shows just about every combination of shirt/kilt/footwear available to (this) man. The link is below.

    Thanks

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the advice and I enjoyed chekcing the pictures out on the site.

Now I just need my kilt to arrive. I have the misfortune of picking a welsh tartan pattern and the welsh tartan center hasn't got around to weaving it yet (even though I ordered my kilt November 2004).

If anyone out there wants a madoc/maddux/maddox pattern for any reason, please order some so my kilt can be made! My guess is that they haven't bothered to get on with it since there wasnt much demand (pesky Welsh... to be so practical!)

Oh well, I guess I will just keep skiing in boring old gortex.

I've found (by reccomendation of the folks at Seattle Kilts) that Rugby shirts look rather sharp with the kilt. I currently have one black and red Guinness Rugby that fits perfectly with my Black and Red Menzies tartan. If you can find somehting that works well with your tartan's colors, that's always an option.
