All Hallows Eve ?
Well, it looks like I may have to go with the wife to the midnight pickup of the Harry Potter book. Typically I wear my kilt everywhere. Thing is I am thinking twice about wearing my kilt to the pickup tonight. From my understanding, people dress up in costumes and such for these midnight pickups of the new Harry Potter books. I would not wear my kilt to a Halloween party, so I am appreshensive to wear it to something where other people dress up and make it seem that kilts are costumes.
David brought up an intersting point here that I hadn't thought of: Halloween.
I have gone full time since the last time the 31st of October rolled by, and I do love any excuse to party (within reason, of course).
Hell of a problem. How do you wear the kilt on Halloween and not have it be a costume, while wearing a costume?
I'm sure this has been addressed, and we are more than 3 months out... but it's a thought.

Go as the ghost of Bonnie Prince Charlie or some such thing, perhaps? Or MacBeth?

just don't go as William Wallace!!!! I saw two very tacky Wallaces lat year in homemade clothes and blue make up. It's funny that William Wallce looked just like Mel Gibson.

You know, I've thought about it, and there's always Groundskeeper Willy. Dye my hair and beard red and bring a rake!
On the flip side, maybe wearing pants for a change might be costume enough.
Naaah, forget that idea.

I could easily go as Grounds Keeper Willie. I don't even have to dye my hair and beard red.
p.s. I was able to weasle out of going to the midnight pickup of Harry Potter Book 6. I don't get into those kind of things like my wife and her friends.

With a great kilt (belted plaid) you're set to devise any "costume" from the 1500's through the 1700's! With a philabeg, add a couple of hundred years to that range....

You know, I think you all are probably overthinking the situation. The kilt is supposed to be just another garment choice, right? How many times have any of you taken normal pieces of your clothing and with the right accessories turn the whole ensemble into a costume. Does that turn those pieces of clothing into costumes forevermore, of course not.
Sure, some people will think you're only wearing the kilt as a costume, but we all get that anyway. Lighten up and have fun, it's Halloween!

Halloween...
You could always go as Archie, Duncan, Hector, Killwillie or Gollie from Monarch of the Glen on All Hallow's Eve, or stretch it a bit and go as Tam O' Shanter & read selections from that poem or "Halloween" by Burns! ;)
Cheers,
Todd

Or, since it's Hallowe'en and you're not supposed to wear your regular clothes, wear something other than a kilt.
