Easy Homemade Kilt Hanger for Leather Kilts
All my storebought kilt hangers have dropped my leather kilts. Thought it through, came up with an idea, tried it, and it works.
Went to True Value and bought a 2x2. Only needed about four feet, one hanger was 21" long, the other 20" long. Of course 2x2s are really about 1 3/4" square.
I snapped up my brown leather Utilikilt, folded it in half and laid it on the floor the way I wanted it to hang. Then I measured and sawed off 20" of the 2x2.
Then I laid the 2x2 out along the waistline of the kilt and marked where each of the beltloops were on that side. Then I drilled pilot holes for the 1 1/4" safety hooks I was using. These are hooks that screw in and have a little flip up piece of metal over the hook opening. Figured that might help keep the kilt from bouncing loose when hanging in transit.
I screwed the hooks in so that the hook opening faced toward the end of the 2x2 is was attached to. Again, making it harder for the belt loops to slip off.
Then I hooked the belt loops on that side to the hooks and turned the kilt over to the other side. Marked the position of the belt loops on that side, drilled the pilot holes, and fitted the hooks on that side.
Then hooked all the belt loops up and found the balance point. Marked that and drilled the top of the 2x2 to accept the large hanger hook - the big hook that goes over the hanger rod.
It worked great!
Then I repeated the process with my saffron leather RKilt. Found that I needed to use a couple big clips to hold the underapron to the outer apron. Used those office clips for clamping stacks of paper together.
Now my leather kilts are hung on hangars that will hold them.
Just finished, no pics yet.
