Kilt Pin Regs
While visiting the Scottish Tartan Museum in Franklin NC I saw manaquin dressed in a solid scottish military uniform. The kilt pin was the standard military issue like the economy pin from USA Kilt http://www.usakilts.com/kiltpins.php . The part that interested me was that I have been wearing mine with the clasp part pointing upward but the museum had there's pointing down. Matt or anyone, is this a preference or is the clasp to point downward?

Geoffrey(tailor) catalogue has several pictures of kilts with plain pin. All with the clasp down.
Not sure if there is a rule or significance, but that catalogue would be my reference.
Probably easier to push the pin in downwards and less risky than upwards?

I've been wearing mine pointing down. Only reason really being that the pin went down on the other kilt pin I have as well.

I just went through my 1940's edition of the British Army Uniforming regulations, and I see nothing referring to the kilt pin. However, every military photo I have seen from the WWI era to the present has it facing down.

I'd imagine it's so that, if the pin ever came unclasped for any reason, it wouldn't just fall out.

Kilt pin down
Apparently it was due to Quenn Victoria who had to preserve a soldier's modesty when his apron flapped. She removed her hat pin and pinned downwards. True or not ???

Whether there are any rules or not, this is the most reasonable and practical answer I could think of.

I used to wear one of those diaper pins with my kilt during the day. I guess I was wearing it upside down, too, with the snap at the top.
Now, I just leave a more decorative pin on the kilt all the time.

So that's why every one has been staring at me in my kilt
