    Mystery to me...Sporran Sizes...

Looking at sporrans from various sources...no one who sells Sporrans seems interested in noting their size...length, width, depth...so a customer can make an intelligent decision.

Did a search for "sporran" and see many calls for changes and modernization for cell phones etc....but don't see how to figure if what's out there is big enough without the sizes being given...why such a big secret...or just another case of buyer beware?

Help me if I'm missing some sites with sizes. Thanks.

Getting the sizes for sporrans is a pain. From what I been seeing, most sporrans messure 5.5" x 5" and some are 7" x 5". Those are just the everyday ones.

    Ron,
You seem to be interested in the capacity rather than it's physical size.
Rucksacks are often measured in litres (How many litres they can hold).Maybe companies should start doing that.....Maybe I should take a picture of one of ours with contence....Most sporrans only have a 2 inch gusset between front and back and when they are stiff it doesn't make for much room.
    All the Best.....David.

There doesn't seem to be any sizing system - other than "child's", "adult". Can anyone suggest one?

As most sporrans follow (in a notional way, often) the shape of a shoe for a heavy horse, perhaps a measurement for the throat and another for the depth would be enough?

As for the gussets, I usually use leather more than 2 1/4inches wide - what's the point of a sporran if you can't put stuff in it?

I've played with the idea of a mobile phone insert, but I gave up on it. The reason was that I don't want the legal liabilities of radiation damage to someone's private parts; and I couldn't come up with an effective shielding method. They are, after all, essentially microwave radios.

I recommend using a commercial belt pouch for the phones now, to be worn on the kilt belt (most of them are clip ons, and the others often have a carrying strap that will fit over a 2 1/4 inch belt).

For my view point the most important criteria for a sporran would be:

    1. Does your hand fit easily into the pouch?

    2. Is it large enough to carry your stuff? (Hopefully you don't have too much stuff to carry)

    3. Does it open and close easily and fasten securely?

    4. Is it reasonably soft?

I think if you can achieve this mix in a reasonable size, you would have a winner!

I've noticed all this myself. Does anyone know which of the readily available commercial sporrans has the largest capacity?

Nichols Brothers are quite good, although Janet Eagleton also makes quite roomy ones. I don't know which would have the largest capacity, and I don't know where Maragret Morrison would fit in this; and I'm not sure about Canadian or American manufacturers. To tell the truth, I've never tried to measure them all for capacity.

Freelander Sporran. I have stuffed it with a blackberry, wallet, and a digital camera with room to spare.

Habing read alot of posts here about sporrans I think the Buss Kidder and Freelander sporrans probably have the best capacity. I have one commercially made sporran that I rarely wear because the stiffness of the front and back make it uncomfortable to wear. My everyday sporran and dress sporran I made myself. The everyday sporran is soft jacket grade leather and closed it measures 6 inches wide by 8 inches high when flat and has a 3 inch gusset. It holds quite a bit.
