A funny thing happened during the Fest or thank god for the sporran!

While at the Chicago Celtic Festival yesterday (kilted for only the second time in public!), I had something funny happen that I wanted to share. I, and my wife and 2 young daughters, had been walking around looking at the exhibits, loving the music, and basically having a great time when we decided to get something to eat. We walked up to a booth that offered Irish sausages and chips, corned beef sandwich, etc.. It was in a standard vendor tent like we have all seen and there were ropes tied to large metal stakes (2-3 inches around, 20-24" long, with 8-10" or more sticking out of the ground) at each corner of the tent. I had just gotten an order of sausages and chips and went over to my wife and kids standing by one corner of the tent to offer some chips to my daughters. Unfortunately, the stroller was right in front of one of the stakes. As I stepped in front of the stroller to give them a chance to grab some chips, my left leg got caught by the stake. Needless to say, I went down hard (no thats not the funny part you sadistic bastards!). I was able to partially catch myself during the fall on the fake fence that was set up and backed up by some tables, although I hit my right knee pretty hard and also got the right side of my ribcage hard enough on the fence to be stiff today.

Now the funny part comes up (thanks for hanging in there!). After the pain from the left calf hitting the stake, and the right knee coming down full force on the ground, subsided, my very first thought was what I was showing to the world (remember [I know that the beginning of the post was a long time ago!] that this is only my second kilted experience)! Thankfully, or by design, when I looked down I saw my kilt flared out along both of my legs and the sporran lying/laying on the ground between my decidely outstretched legs.

There is no point behind this post (unless you count the visual picture of a 6' 3" 220lb kilted man hitting the ground hard at the Celtic festival!) other than a confirmation of a practical reason for a sporran beyond its decorative value.

I will follow with a funny bunny story tomorrow (which is really funny to say, but I did not make up!), which oddly also involves a large kilted man on his first kilted pulic outing and a small, immature bunny!

arrr, the scars and bruises will add to the warrior image. and look good for talk like a pirate day.

can't wait for the bunny story....

last week or so, I picked up my grandson outside the supermarket and didn't fully realize that his foot was under the edge of the kilt, until I felt the draft. Thankfully, my grandfather had told me the reason why the sporran sits over, as somebody else named it, me boyos.
