My DH has been wearing kilts on formal occasions for a couple of years. I think it's awesome and would love to see him wear them more often as casual wear (it's the cost that's preventing that).

Welcome Ione! I will echo that as soon as your husband reads a couple of posts, sees the amount of information here, and the openness of the postings (which can be good and bad!), he will soon be a regular poster.

However, don't let that make you think this is only a board for him. If you review some of the topics, you will find that the woman/women in our lives are the hardest ones to get to accept the wearing of the kilt. Your husband already has the support! We also value the female viewpoint. Shay and Sherry are 2 that come to mind that are regulars whose input is invaluable.

I'm in the same boat- I can get my husband to wear them to 'Celtic' events, but not for everyday wear. (I actually bought his first kilt <an Amerikilt> as a wedding present, and plan on getting him a formal one for an anniversary present) Silly men.. sometimes I think they're scared of being sexy and attractive...

Welcome to the board. Like Kilted Code Warrior said acceptance by the ladies in our lives is very important. I was just talking with my wife yesterday. I told her I saw a couple of kilts that I really liked, but I couldn't really justify buying any more unless I wore them out more often. Her answer was that that was a good idea. Tell your husband that you'd like him to take you out to dinner , and wear his kilt sometime. As for expense, There are several places where he can get a decent kilt for under $100. Stillwater kilts is one of those. Rocky at USA kilts sells his Philibegs for just over $100. You could maybe save a little on expense by making the kilt an anniversary, birthday or Christmas gift. That way, at least part of the cost would be momey you were going to spend anyhow. ( I'm starting to drop hints to my wife now about that Stillwater heavyweight in the black shadow tartan)

I just made a casual canvas kilt for the cost of the canvas, a spool of thread and nine inches of velcro. It was, oh, about twenty two bucks.

Of course, I already had the sewing machine and the iron and ironing board. It's a challenge, but I finished it off in one marathon saturday and about four other evenings at home. A quick visit to the goodlocal fabric store to find some nice wool blend tartan (will run you about $15 a yard...two-three yards, you're in for $30-45) and you're on your way. There's also ebay.

Or, if you're not the sewing type, check out USA Kilts, or Freedom kilts if he'd rather have a non-tartan, contemporary kilt.

Welcome. You can find a lot of threads here that cover the topics you touched on, The "true cost" of kilts vrs pants, cost effective kilt options, and best kilt values. Your Husband can also find a lot of support here for wearing the kilt more often. A person doesn't have to wear the kilt exclusively (although some of us do) but it deserves to be worn to more than just Highland Games. I hope you convince him to wear the kilt more often.
