    I scored!

Yeah...the pressure is on to "roll your own"...to which end I stopped at the Hancock fabric store...and found (prepare to go "awhhh!") 100% wool, probably like an 11 oz. fabric in a tartan (I've been trying to figure out if it's a legit tartan or just a generic)...marked WAY down to $12.99 a yard...BUT...it was on the 50% off table! $6.50 a yard for wool? Sold! Got six yards of the 60" width and figure that I can do two four yarders: one for me and one for my daughter...since we're both relatively thin, it ought to work out.

The best part is that I had been thinking in terms of Hunting Stewart for my next kilt and this is almost dead on Hunting Stewart but with a faint orange stripe in the pattern...

So now my wife is giving me the "are you letting this kilt thing get out of hand?" routine. To which I have to defend: "Besides the fact that kilts look really cool, this is a project that our daughter and I have gotten into...what's the problem?"

So the thing is that my wife has much more sewing expertise than I do and I will need to impose on her for some critical information...but just asking some of these "elementary" questions has sort of tipped her from being skeptical toward actually helping out.

    AAWWW!

I'll have to make a visit to Hancock's myself.

It sounds like your kilt will be a family project, & that's cool. But be careful, your DW & DD will wanted kilted skirts of their own!

    Thumbs up

Of course you know we wanna see pics, right!
Don't worry too much about the tartan issue, if it's a first attempt just try to get the look right , and enjoy the time with your daughter.
Oh and watch closely at your wifes sewing men sew too !
    Best wishes.

Sounds like the 'tartan' material you scored at such a low price is the same found on Hancock Fabric's website:

    Uniform Plaid Fabric

Click the "View Swatches" button (bottom left) and you'll see what I mean.

    Way to shop, auld argonian!

Actually one of the ladies at one of the other Hancock Fabrics around here did tell me about that particular group of fabrics...they didn't have any on hand but I'm familiar with it because my children attended a school that required uniforms made from it. The stuff that I found is definitely wool and lighter and is not this material...but this stuff wears like iron (and is almost as stiff)...it's not uncommon for a girl's jumper made of that uniform polyester to be passed down through several kids in a family.

The lady at Hancocks expressed her opinion that this stuff was inordinately expensive and when most people who would sew their own school uniforms see the price they just give up and go to a uniform service and buy one ready-made...it's cheaper.

Auld, congrats on the material! Hancock is where I got mine. I am also jealous that your daughter is old enough to help with project (Hmmm, where is your son? too hip? ). I guess I will have to wait 3-4 more years before mine get to that point, but at least when I wear my kilt (for whatever occasion) my oldest tells me "You look handsome Daddy!".
The kilt concealed a blaster strapped to his thigh. Lazarus Long
