    Girl's "kilt"

Gentlemen I need a little help, my daughter Kelli could use a nice kilt or kilt-like skirt in Gordon tartan.

Question #1, Where can I find a good one at a good price?

Question #2, What size would a 14 year old girl wear? She wears "Small-Short" in BDU pants. So under 27 inches waist size I guess.

She has joined the High School Marine Corps JROTC this year. I beleive that I have a budding warrior princess on my hands. She should have the Clan Colors I think. I would buy a kilt for a son in the same situation, why not for her as well?

Take her measurements just as you would for a man's kilt.

If you call up and order from a large-scale highland outfitter, you'll get a lady's skirt that is machine stitched, likely unlined, and with really small leather straps and buckles.

If you don't mind paying a bit more for it, and want a real quality item, call up an individual kilt maker who can make your skirt for you, and you can get a hand stitched item made to the same quality standards as a man's kilt.

    Aye,
    Matt

    Thanks guys!

I am stuck in Germany, my daughter is in Louisiana, so getting an exact size is problematic, to say the least. I talked to her maternal Grandmother, she is as clueless on size as I am. Arn't girls supposed to know this stuff?

Even on the wildest of chances, I guess her size, she will out grow it in a year anyway.

That's true. I wish I could remember the name of the vendor but at Grandfather Mt. a few years back we bought my son a nice Fraser Hunting kilt. It was designed with teens in mind and had velcro on the waste to allow for expansion and at the bottom there were a couple of extra inches of material folded under and sewn down. The idea was to undo the threads and voila, you gain another couple on inches in length and another year or two of kilt use. In all other respects it is a normal kilt so far as I can tell.

Matt, any ideas on which vendor makes these kilts? I'll look at it when I get home and see if there's a tag with info.

Actually- that would cover a 26-29ish waist(I ran down and checked my old BDUs). BDUs have buttoned tabs on the side that allow some adjustment. However, at least it gives you a starting point.

    Stillwater.

Stillwater has a Gordon tartan "economy" kilt but their sizes only go down to a 30 inch waist, and the length would be too long as well. Shame though at $44 USD the price is right there.

I know that I saw a good price on tartan skirts on a traditional kilt website but I'l be danged if I can recall where.

    Hi Sir Robert

If you're going to invest in the Marine Corps tartan, it might make sense to have a traditional kilt made for her that could be made with a little "growing room" plus enough extra fabric to let it out if she grows more. At 14, she probably may not actually grow a _whole_ lot more.

It's tough to surprise someone with a traditional kilt, because they aren't made in "sizes". Someone will have to take her measurements - it's not hard to do, but they are necessary. Let me know if you need measuring instructions.

And a fourteen year old girl could be going to a dance or something that her grandma would need her measurements to get a dress sized correctly for...

    Just a thought.

I know I had raised the question about a woman's kilted skirt about a year ago for my wife with Rocky. At that time he just needed measurments to make it happen. She decided to go with a tartan that Rocky did not have but this would be the best first place to start.
