    A *proper* Philly Burns Night

Burns Supper to benefit philanthropic organization

Reed Elsevier, in partnership with Greater Philadelphia Cares will host the Burns Supper, a fun filled night of Scottish food, drink, and song and will take place at the Union League of Philadelphia located in Center City Jan 22. The tradition of the Burns Supper is an annual celebratory tribute to the life of Robert Burns, Scotland's most gregarious, romantic, and sharp-tongued bard.

Renowned worldwide as a great poet and keen social commentator, Burns wrote movingly about love, universal brotherhood, and the human condition. He wrote from the heart and, to this day, his words are considered timeless. The Burns Supper ritual was started by the poet's close friends after his death in 1796, as a tribute to his memory. Today, people all over the world come together on his birthday to eat a traditional Scottish meal and recite works by, about, and in the spirit of Robert Burns. From 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., guests will enjoy an authentic buffet dinner, live Scottish music (featuring bagpipes), Scottish dancing, a prize raffle, a guest speaker, and Whiskey drams. The dress code for this event is black tie optional or full Scottish dress.

Ticket prices are as follows: $65 Burns Scholar - under 30 years old, $85 Burns Professor - regular price, $100 Burns Laureate - blue ribbon VIP status All of the proceeds will benefit Greater Philadelphia Cares. To purchase tickets and for more information, please call 215-564-4544.

I would love to go to a proper Burns Supper in Philly. I went to one last year and it was "less than proper".

Alas, Kelly and I will be (sorry to brag, but...) in Scotland for a Burns supper in January. There's a trade show in Glasgow and we're sticking around for a week to take in the sights!
