    Utilikilt after 2.5 years

Couple years ago, I bought an Original UK in OD. Didn't wear it much the first year, but this year - well, I haven't needed to wash underwear very often.

After a ludicrous number of washings, it's holding up perfectly, and that's after I started drying it in the dryer. The fabric has started to soften nicely. Love it! And I need more.

I noticed when I visited the UK tent at the Long's Peak Games, their Originals seem to be made from a softer fabric now than when I bought mine. Anyone know anything about that?

Anyway, mad props to Utilikilts and their American craftsmanship. That's a big thing for me, which is why the only jeans I'll buy are Carhartt.

Oh dear, *another* front range member....wil you be joining us at the Celtic Tavern November 14th for a kilt night?

ObUtilikilt: Its possible that they're buying prewashed material now-I do remember my UK not being terribly soft untill after a couple of washings, as well.

Bryan...I had no idea there were so many of us here in Colorado: maybe we ought to bulk order the state tartan...

We have a state tartan? Hmm.... If I had thought about it soon enough, I'd have designed the "If C Wins You Lose" tartan. :-)

Funny thing about our state. We don't start trends, we buck them. And that starts a trend. I think our referendum process is a fine example.

    Indeed we do: check out

    http://www.district-tartans.com/

Then click on Tartan Finder, United States, and Colorado. Kind of a cool design, don't you think? I'm also fond of New Mexico's tartan (my wife is from there).

Bryan...pleated to the stripe on these is the way to go, I think...

I love the NM tartan as well. I was born there, and lived there for the first five years of my life. I loved it there. Hope to get a kilt in the NM tartan eventually... though it's fourth or fifth in line right now.

    UK fabric

Excellent! I love when the original twill fabrics wear in... they get almost fuzzy! I traded my corduroy Utilikilt for a Standard Original. (The Standards are the ones with a zip-fly closure, like jeans.) It has that ultra-soft feel they get after a few years of good hard wear...

The Original's fabric has always been a Polyester/Cotton twill weave of a particular weight. So no, the fabric hasn't been changed to something significantly different. (The same fabric from two different mills will differ slightly, but not enough to be readily apparent to the untrained eye.)

My guess is the difference is probably mostly due to perception and rapidly fading memory cells! :-)

People commonly ask for used kilts, or for us to make ones from a "broken in" denim or twill... everyone likes that soft feel! Maybe that is why the aftermarket in UKs is so robust...?

    Mmmm.... sooooft...
