    Jackets...

OK, as I posted on another thread, I scored this Argyll jacket on eBay today. Being that I am at the end of my kilt and kilt accessories budget (actually exceeded it 2 kilts ago!), I am wondering about jacket etiquette. I know that a PC and coatee are the equivalent of coat and tails. The black Argyll jacket is considered fairly formal as well, both because of the color and the style. Then you have the standard tweed jackets in a variety of colors that are the equivalent of a sports coat. Am I correct so far?

Anyway, my question is if a black Argyll jacket, such as I have now purchased, can be dressed down (different buttons, remove epaulets, remove cuffs, etc..) for use in less formal occasions? And has anybody done so?

It seems to me that the Argyll jacket is more like a blazer, while the Bonnie Prince Charlie is more like a tux. I'd think the same rules would apply for the Argyll as apply to a blazer. With a tux jacket, it doesn't matter what I'm wearing with it, it's still a formal jacket. Not so with the blazer. You can dress it up or dress it down simply by what you're wearing with it. I can wear my Blazer with a pair of jeans and a polo shirt, or I can wear it with a pair of khaki pants, white shirt, and a tie. It seems to me the same would apply to the Argyll.

    Nice jacket btw.

For a more formal look wear the Argyll with a waistcoat, and bow tie, change to a basic dress shirt and regular tie to go down a notch, without the waistcoat to go down still another notch. A dress sporran for the more formal, plain sporran for a more casual look. The argyll is the most versatile jacket you can wear.

I agree with Bubba's analysis, the black Argyle Jacket is the most versatile jacket. You can dress it down by using a plain black sporran and a kilt tie to match your flashes. If the event is more formal, dress it up with a black silk tie or a formal pleated shirt with a black bowtie.

I personally own a black Argyle with the silver buttons, I love it. My black sporran has a small amount of silver on it, but is rather plain and looks good with day wear, you can also dress the Argyle down by using a leather sporran strap instead of the chain. Black wing tips will complete the look for either occaision.

You have made a great choice! You will enjoy it!

Bryan, of course pics, just as soon as it makes its way across the pond! Since the auction ended this weekend, I expect to hear about shipping tomorrow. It is supposed to go out airmail, so I would expect to see it in a few weeks.

Thanks to all for the advice. Glad to know that this one jacket can serve my multitude of needs.
