Interesting article... I've always wondered why mroe guys didn't pick up field hockey, I never even thought it might have been the uniforms until now. But there's one problem:

The 32-year-old amendment requires that the percentage of female athletes in a school's athletic program needs to match the percentage of girls in the student body.

This is incorrect. The actual wording is as follows:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Private schools can still do whatever they please, and it's not true at all that the amount of female (or male) athletes has to correlate to the amount of female (or male) students. As a matter of fact, Title IX doesn't specifically mention women as far as I can see, though certainly has worked more to their benefit owing to the lack of female educational opportunities..

There is part of a three pronged test (See link below) that asks if there proportions match, but there are other ways of proving compliance. I think the writer was misreading the tests as needing a quorum of three, not just one positive answer.

Personally, I'd be happy to see coed teams- I think it can only work to everyone's advantage in the long run. And more men in kilts, whoohoo!

I'm not a big field hockey fan, but here's the benefit to guys playing field hockey:

While a whole squad of modern-day Bravehearts may be a few years away, it does give some real hope that someday soon a whole new generation may get to host their own field hockey camp on the plush turf of Teamer Field, or at the very least make it fashionable to wear kilts on an everyday basis.

the argument against co-ed teams is that most rules in most sports allow for total male in the final push or event. Women must sit out but, hey, they got to play the earlier part: this denies women the opportunity to participate fully in the final glory. Better to have sports that maintain the start/finish ratio. You're right in pointing out the law is more for budget ratio than gender play ratio and I'll make a point of reading the link tomorrow.
