kilted in north dakota
hello all. i've been mostly lurking for the last few weeks (did post once) so i figured i should introduce myself. my name is james and i'm a McAlear which is a variant of MacClure who are a sept of the MacLeods. last year i got a full tank in the MacMillan tartan for my wedding (hasn't happened yet so my fiance will not let me wear it in public which is killing me). trying it on in the house was enough to get me hooked. i ordered a wool casual kilt in hunting MacLeod and i today received one of the new standards from SWK in hunting MacLeod (see my reply in the general kilt talk section for "So, who's got a new SWK Standard?"). i also just ordered a lowlander tartan kilt form SK to knock around the house in because it was on sale and it looks a lot like the MacMillan black tartan. i have yet to see anyone else kilted here in fargo (yes, i've seen the movie) aside from the local pipers, but i'm sure they're out there. actually, this is north dakota, they're probably not.
i'm "qualified" to wear the following taratns and i hope to own a kilt in all of them someday:
MacLeod - my family ties to Scotland (2 already!!!)
MacMillan - i'll soon be marrying a McMullen (1 for sure already and one more or less)
Isle of Skye - home of the MacLeods
County Armagh - where the McAlears resided before comming to the states
Ulster - Armagh is a part of Ulster
Clergy - i got ordained by the Universal Life Church to marry some friends and
then had to take the state of minnesota to court so they'd accept my credentials...which they did in a plea arrangement. have since married several happy couples. i figure that qualifies.
Minnesota - spent all my summers at the lake and lived in the minneapple full time for several years
Colorado - lived there while i got my masters in anthropology (archaeology)
New York City - lived in the big apple for a couple of years...used to have spike lee's old job at a film distributor.
i'm not going to count the national tartans and those of a similar ilk, but that doesn't mean i won't get a kilt in them some day.

Greatings James,
Now the big question is will the SWK stand up to the ND winter and not just a Quick run from the car to mini mart. You know a walk a bout?

Welcome to the forum James, you do have an impressive list there. trouble is, I'm Morrison, so I shouldn't be speaking with a McLeod (only kidding).
May i suggest the main qualification for wearing a kilt is that you be a male person in need of greater freedom!
Good to see you here!

Welcome to the board from a former Winnipeg, MB resident and frequent visitor to Fargo and Grand Forks. Last time I was home in Winnipeg I ran into 3 people that were kilted. I can only assume that that carries down into ND.
It sounds like you have an great inventory worked up. I really like the Isle of Skye tartan (and the place).

From Fargo, eh? Guess I'll have to quit complaining about the cold in Chicago...you guys get it first and pass it on to the rest of us.
Best

(and you will find that SWK Standard to be pretty warm...don't know if it's Fargo-warm. but it's warm)
