A Natural Progression of the Sgian Dubh to Computer Technology
So, if men traditionally wore a sgian dubh in their kilt hose in olden days when one might likely need it for self-defense have not times evolved to where rather than a knife, a kilted gent working in the computer field might instead keep a small screwdriver there?
Think there are a bunch of men on this board who wear kilts to work, and once at work have frequent need of a screwdriver.
Shouldn't be hard to make a leather sheath for those computer screwdrivers.
Just seems a natural, almost Darwinian, evolution from knife to tool....
A new niche market - computer screwdrivers with elegant decorative handles...
Are there other frequently used tools for other trades that could be kept at "sock top" when kilted at work?
Tradition evolves. Why not practically?

You've inspired me, Ron! Watch for "Kilted Bob's Sgian Dubh Thumb Drive," coming soon to a computer shop near you.

Thats an interesting idea. I've stuck a small screwdriver in my sock top plenty of times while adjusting irrigation systems.

While I don't keep it in my sock, I am almost never without my Gerber multi tool on my belt. It happens to be black, so I always have my "Black Knife".

How about putting one of those "thumb drive" mechanisms in the handle? You could whip off a cap on the end and there would be the USB connector.

Great idea Ron. You could take it a step farther and design a "pocket protector" type of thing for various tools. I can see it now, sort of a badge for the kilted geek!

Thats not too funny. Back in October one of my friends came home on leave. He went through security at Heathrow,JFK and Atlanta with one on his belt.It was in plain sight. He had forgotten about wearing it until his wife asked about it on the way home from the airport.

Some interesting ideas,
I've done some alternative Sgian Dubhs in the past in the form of bottle openers - in fact I was wearing one of these last night to the Loch Ness Hogmanay Festival see:

If I can find a multitool that could be attached to one of my Sgian Dubh handles then I'd give it a go.

A smallish knife is probably used more often as a general purpose tool than a defensive weapon.
I wear a Gerber multi-tool at work, but I think it is too heavy to ride in a sock. Besides, safety regulations don't allow me to wear a kilt at work.
