    Amerikilts?

Can anyone here recommend the Amerikilt? It seems to be very reasonably priced and I like its style, but I haven't seen much talk about it on the forums.

Try the search function at the top of the screen. I got 5 pages of threads with "amerikilt" in them somewhere. All won't be reviews but there could be some great information in them.

From my experience Amerikilts are a great inro to solid color kilts. You don't get a lot of "Bells and Whistles" with them but they are well built. The bottom edge is a bit ruugh since it is not hemmed or selvedged but that is somehting you could have a tailor do later.

Mike is a great guy to do business with as well and their service is exceptional.

I just noticed that you have a UK already.... Amerikilts are significantly lighter than UK's . You may want to call Mike and ask about a camo kilt. They had some camo cloth at one time but I don't see them on their web site now.

I have four AmeriKilts and agree Mike has great customer service.

I also have three belts from AmeriKilts with one on the way, really like those belts, quality, great value, and basic. Have one black and one brown for under the Buddha belly, and one black and one brown on the way for the upper waist with traditional kilts. Can't beat the quality or price for such quality.

AmeriKilts are basic, but a solid value. I have the black, forest, tiger stripe camo (love it!!), and putty (War II Khaki). One nice thing, if you get more than one AmeriKilt you can match or mix the cloth "sporrans." Putty "sporran" with forest kilt and vice versa. Or tiger stripe camo "sporran" with putty kilt.

Have lots of pics in my gallery, which I think is still down for server repairs, but about a week past anticipated repair completion, so maybe soon.

One thing I've noticed about AmeriKilts is that they take GREAT photos. Not sure why, but some of my best kilt pics are with the AmeriKilts. They have a very clean look.

They are lighter weight, at least the ones I have, so use them mostly in warmer weather.

You can't go wrong for the money. and don't forget the belts.

You can do a search on Amerikilts and should get some posts. I've got 3 on order: a tan, denim, and corduroy. As I can recall, posting have had pro's and con's. I'm expecting the pleats to wrinkle more easily than my Stillwaters, and more touchup ironing, but I can live with that. I'll be making some posts about them after I get and wear them. I probably will not have them for at least two weaks.

I would guess that they probably are what they are - inexpensive, modern versions of kilts. They are not going to fit like a taylor made, hand stitched wool kilt. There will not be as many pleats as a tank. I expect them to be nice, modern looking versions of a kilt that are comfortable to wear, and can be worn casually in public.

    Ron,

Is your AK putty a light weight? Mine's canvas, almost like a UK Workman's.

    Ron,

After reading your post, I had to order one of their belts. I was going to were a 1.75 black belt that I have with the 3 AK's I have on order. After what you said about the AK's I'm going into jonesing shock. They e-mailed me that it would be 3 weeks. I think that was a week ago. But I also have 2 canvas traditionals I'm jonesing for from the Scottish Tartans Museum. They said 4-6 weeks, and I think that was about 10 days ago. I may need to order another Stillwater before I pass out!

    Good point Mowgli,

My putty and forest AmeriKilts are heavier than my black and tiger stripe camo.

Don't have a fabric guage to measure them, but the Putty and Forest AKs feel more like the UK Survival II fabric, but not much thinner than the UK Workman's.

You'll like the belts too New Kilt, they have a craftsman that makes them to order for them.

I'll just chime in and agree that the AK's are a good value for the money. I have a tan AK (not big on the sporran, I prefer one hanging from a strap), but I do like the styling and price. It is much lighter in weight, a little lighter than my SWK Nightstalker, and I have not worn it since the weather here started going below (and staying below!) 40. The same is true for the Nightstalker. I have worn my SWK Heavyweight in the colder weather.

Sorry, got off-topic. I do find that the AK wrinkles for any reason at all. I really should iron it every time I wear it, but don't. The light weight fabric, and the type of fabric, just make it wrinkle easily. I might have to order a forest green or putty though. It sounds like they are heavier weight material.

Hmmmh, a reason to buy another kilt...

    KCW,

My putty wrinlkles pretty badly too, and the pleats curl something fierce. It was also very stiff when I first got it. Compared to the UK and my Stillwaters, it's a very casual garment. I now use it strictly for home improvement tasks, kind of like a UK workman with out all the pockets and loops (and 2 for the price of one). 8-)

    Mowgli,

Same here. I will now only wear it to work right after ironing it. And since I hate to iron (must try Ron's fishing weight trick), it does not get much office wear.
