Hey, I'm Scottish!
As I mentioned on this thread, I was talking to my uncle about family ancestry and geneaology and he mentioned that he had already gone back as far as possible on the Irons family line (one of my ancestry lines, but that is a story for a whole other thread!), and had it posted on his website. I got very excited as I did not realize he had done this. So I asked him how far back he had gone, and he said "All the way back to our roots, doesn't make any sense not to go all the way back!". So I said where does it go back to? And he said....
Wait for it....
S C O T L A N D!!!!
And I was floored! Now I have ties to Welsh and Scottish and I am talking with my Mom today and she thinks that on her side it also goes back to Ireland! Even though I got the news about Scottish roots just before the funeral service, I felt like doing a happy dance!
Rob... going to jump back into my geneaology program and see where else I came from...

Glad to hear that you have gotten this "validation"...it's great when you find out that someone else in your family has done a lot of research into the family lineage and that you can take advantage of it. Same happened for me and the original researcher began back in the 1930's and the body of knowledge has grown since then as relatives near and far add information.
Sorry that you received the news at such a sad occaision...if the services were being held in one of these traditional Irish family run funeral homes here in Chicago, they would have had a special room set aside for the attendees to have coffee, some pastry, an occaisional nip of the hard stuff and a smoke in...you could have done the happy dance in there and no one would have thought any less of you.
Seriously, though, my condolences for your loss and my congratulations on your new information.
Best

AA, thanks.
We actually had the memorial service and then an "Irish wake". If the info had been provided at the wake after the memorial service, I would have celebrated more, but the conversation happened when we were picking everybody up to go to the funeral home, and it was the first time many of us had been together in many years, so there was some hesitation and reservation in getting close to people. That was gone by the end of the day.

That doesn't surprise me at all. It seems that anyone in the US of European descent, who family has been in North America any length of time at all, will have some Scottish blood (and Irish, and Welsh, and English, and German, etc.).

I'm going to have to do some digging on my dad's side of the family as that's Irish-German.
My mother's side, however, is a lost cause as it's German, Dutch, and (no I am not joking) Indonesian.

Recent advances in and greater utilization of DNA testing , especially in the African American communities (Click here to see article) have lead to great discoveries in the far more widespread genetic mixing of ALL people than previously thought.
Maybe we are all just one big happy family after all.....

I discovered Scottish roots by chance as well. Looking back through the family tree I saw almost all Germans, and then, great, great, great, great grandmother was from Scotland! No one ever told me!
