Women and Kilt Wearing

Alright, this came up on another thread, so let me quote:

On that subject Shay, my best friends (female) wants me to make her a kilt as well and we got into a long discussion of should it be a longer one like a womans skirt (something she would NEVER wear - unless on stage for a performance - suffice it to say she isnt the lacey frilly type - not that all women are but you know what i mean...) or a man styled kilt - with the upper apron going from left to right.

have you ever run into any probs/negative reactions from wearing a man styled kilt???

Occasionally someone will ask me why I call it a man's kilt if I'm the one wearing it, but to be honest most folks don't know the difference. I wouldn't wear one to a wedding or other formal occasion, though. There's slightly cheeky and then there's disrespectful.

While I certainly respect folks who tell me they would never wear anything that 'belongs' to the opposite sex, I have to wonder what you folks think in general of women wearing minikilts, kilt skirts, men's kilts, sporrans, etc?

I vaguely remember a discussion about this before, but try searching for 'women" and "kilts" in this forae and you'd be amazed at how much on a totally different topic you'd get!

I always thought a woman's garment was a "Kilted skirt" and aren't the aprons reversed? I'm not sure on that.

Mini kilted skirts of course get my vote. Actually, I don't mind when women wear mini anythings... 8)

Me too, unless she's in a uniform for a band or something... and even then the really hairy ones make me cringe a little. They look like merkins.

I'll be honest. If a woman is wearing a kilted skirt, or a mini kilt, it usually looks pretty good. I am not a big fan of women ordering men's kilts. It is a man's garment and it would be nice to keep it that way. Obviously women in Highland Dance and pipe bands are different, but those are uniforms.

I think alot of guys on this board will agree that there is a decreasing amount of "guy" things out there. Our shirts, jeans, shoes, suits (Still think KD Lang looks like crap in one), our razor blades, and now our kilts have been discovered and adapted by the opposite sex.

In this day and age we also have female hockey (go Team Canada bring back another gold!), soccer, rugby, and boxing. These are ok, but women in this part of the world are now binge drinking, racing cars on streets, fighting, and swearing like a trucker. It's like women have taken all the stupid testosterine driven things about guys that used to drive them nuts and have started doing them themselves.

Meanwhile men are now getting pedicures, facials, waxing (not always a bad idea), watching Martha, etc. Alot of men think that Hollyweird is the place that will tell us how to be men!?! I will admit, I can't fix a car, chop down a tree, or rebuild the house (completely), but as a man of 29 these things were never taught or expected of me in my youth. I think men in this day and age are forgetting how to be men. Even body and facial hair are frowned upon by some women. It's the blurring of the lines and the feminization of men.

The kilt helps bring back that primal hunger and masculinity.

To each their own I guess, but I prefer when women were women and men were men (other wise I would hang out at Tom's Cafe ).

I have no problem with women wearing kilts. But when they wear them, they become skirts in my view. And women are, in general, built differently, so the tailoring of a "kilted skirt" is going to be different from a kilt.

Definitly no problems with minikilts ;), but again, they're just a form of miniskirt.

There are some things in this world that remain masculine.
