Scots ancestry resources
I'm sorry if this is "off kilt" a bit and not posted in the right place, but with all our talk about Scots ancestry, I wondered about what resources some of the members have found useful in their search for their Scots ancestors. There are a lot of genealogical sites--some good, some dubious, and most anxious to take your money (which could be better spent on kilt stuff )
That said, any thoughts on experiences of searching for the old family tree in Scotland?
Thanks,

Michael,
A good free website is www.rootsweb.com, there is lots of good information there, look for information that is well documented. In genealogy documentation is everything. Look on this website and see if there is an active message board for the surname you are researching.
Also take a look at www.electricscotland.com, there is both clan and genealogical information there.
Try doing a google search on your known ancestor's name in quotation marks, if that does not turn up any information, try a google search on your surname with the word genealogy or family tree after it. Be sure and put the search criteria in quotation marks. There are some good family organization sites out that have loads of information.
If you have some questions, feel free to PM me, I've been a genealogy freak for years.
Good hunting, genealogy can be loads of fun.
