    Your evolution in the kilt

I just had a thought. My first kilt was a Sportkilt, I first wore it casualy with a t-shirt, and boots. It looked fine. Then i dressed it up and wore it with a starched shirt bow tie, knee sox, flashes. and waist coat. And people said looked great.
Then I bought a more traditional cut, 3 buckle, 6 yard kilt.
I dress it up, and dress it down. and it looks great. Now, i would never go out in the Sportkilt. So as i look for a (Tank) and am researching all that goes with that traditional type. I worry, will i become a kilt snob? in other words. when all i had was a sport kilt, and i dressed it up, I felt like a million bucks. As soon as it was upgraded it's good looks were reduced in my mind. Anyone have a similar "evolution" Has your casual kilt become just an occupant in your closet? Bottom line: Are you a kilt Snob?

Started out with UKs, then got a PK. After a kilt-buying hiatus, I got a SWK, and have a hand-sewn tank on the way. But no, I don't think I'm a kilt snob. I am a beer snob, won't drink any but a couple domestics. Kilts, though, I love all of mine, regardless of type.

I wouldn't say you are a kilt snob. It appears that your taste in kilts is evolving as it should. It is similar to when you were a child, and a clean pair of jeans was fine for a good restaraunt. As an adult, were to wear pants, you would have something far more formal..jeans just wouldn't cut it.

This is the crossroads you are on. Your first kilt was a casual kilt. Being your only one, you made due with it for any occasion. As your collection of kilts grew, you let those causal kilts take their place...as the "jeans" of your wardrobe. It is a normal progression. I think most everyone here has or is going through this "evolution".

I don't know whether to take offence at the "kilt snob" reference, or to proudly say that I am one!

In all serious, though, I suppose I am one, though I do not own a "casual" kilt, and probably never will.

    Cheers,

Richland, I don't know if it is snobbery, but I also don't wear my SK anymore. With the selection of UK's, PK's, SWK's, and tartans I have, I just feel like it os to casual. Maybe as it gets warmer I will wear it again casually. I also don't care for the fact that the pleats are not sewn at all, so it tends to be more skirt-like.

    Kilt Conasure not Snob

Certainly, I never wish to offend anyone with "kilt Snob" I should choose my words better next time. But it is interesting to see the evolution the kilt makes from a personal standpoint. I am excited to where it takes me. And a bit aprehensive....

My first "kilt" was a converted kilted skirt. Couldn't afford anything better at the time. After awhile I got a Bear Kilt, and the converted skirt got tossed into the donation box. Now I have 7 different kilts ranging from a tank to a UK...something for every occasion.

No kilt snobs out here in the canyonlands of Arizona. This is jean country for the panted, due to all the blowing dust and sand. A whole different world than the city.

I started out with Utilikilts and SportKilts, then added mostly camo kilts from individual kiltmakers like Jeff and Steve. Added some AmeriKilts for a fancier look....but found I just don't like sporrans much.

Once I started to work went to UK mockers, workman's and survivals. Wear them most of the time. No matter how grubby they get I can just toss them in the wash. I love that "Scottish jeans" line because that's what they're like to me.

Of course you can't hang around the kilt world without hankering for a tartan kilt. My first were SportKilts...the old gathered kind...decided to spring for a hand sewn traditional in my clan tartan and once that arrived I was hooked. Now have four more and then sort of backfilled into USAKilts that let me have both the tartan and the washability.

Don't know how many other guys there are on this board that live in the boonies rather than the city. But think we do need and wear contemporary kilts more.
