    Sit!

Last night I was wearing my kilt around the house and I went to sit down on the couch, as I sat I put my hand on the pleats to make sure they wouldn't be all wrinkled when I stood up. My wife was quick to point out that that wasn't a very manly way to sit down. She suggested asking you guys how you all sit down when wearing a kilt.
So, what's the best way to sit down? Do you sweep the pleats or just sit?

I sweep the pleats when I sit.

The trick is to do it with authority and without looking like you're thinking about it, and that comes with practice.

The reason why it's not "manly" looking is because we're just not used to seeing men do such a thing at all.

She probably would have thought worse of thrusting your hips forward to swing the pleats out before sitting. I did that at school when my hands were full, and got a giggle from the girl next to me; she said I sat like a girl.

It's all about form follows function. Women sit the way they do because it works; why shouldn't we?

Hey now, watch it! My wife is a true lady! She is just not familiar (at all) with kilts.
I guess the main idea is just to make sure the pleats are in place as manly as possible. I can do that

I usually sweep both hands to adjust the kilt. If my hands are full I sort of bend my knees so the back of the kilt hits the edge of the chair and then sit and slide back. Can always readjust later. I had my hands full and had to do that as there were ladies and a young boy sitting across from me.

I have also learned when getting into a car, to sit side ways, facing out and then swing in. My wife saw me do that one day and said, "You are learning!" I still have to raise my butt and adjust the kilt for comfort and be sure the pleats are good.

Definitely sweep. On the few times I have sat on a metal chair without sweeping . . . cold shock! So, I always try to make sure there is a nice bit of wool in the right place! Sweeping the pleats is, then, very practical.

Incidentally, it's what I love about this forum . . . "everything you ever wanted to know about kilts, but were afraid to ask!"

Hmmm...as I think about it...as I'm sitting down I'm sweeping the pleats to the right with my right hand while my left hand is on the sporran sort of guiding it (and the fabric underneath it) into position....okay...the left hand is in "defensive position" pushing the front of the kilt down so that there's no chance that anything is going to be revealed.

As someone mentioned earlier, do this with the proper authority and there's no questioning it.

    Best
