    Heads up on stillwater

For those of you that are planning on making your own dress sporrans

I got this e-mail from stillwater

We are currently not stocking more cantles once we exhaust our current supply, unless we find a better supplier.

I've used several of these and they are a great value

Joe - Do you have a pattern for making formal sporrans? I've been thinking of buying a red fox pelt to make one, but I'm not sure about things like stiffening materials and how to make the tassles.

Thanks for the heads up on the cantles. I just ordered a set, even though I may not get to this project for a while.

The easiest way to get a pattern is :
1.cruise the stores on the internet
2.download a picture of a sporran you like
    3.print it off
4.enlarge it to the size you want
5.make sure that the top curve of the sporran is enlarged enough
    to fit the cantle
6.glue the enlarged picture to a piece of file folder
    7. cut it out
    8. you have a pattern

you can cut the gusset to you desired with
I use a 4-5oz cow hide for the front and back
I'm no expert at making sporrans but this works for me

to view a badger sporran I made using this method

making the tassels depends on wether you them to look like balls of fur or the fringe looking type

I'm just starting another one with a muskrat fur front
I'll try to get pictures posted as I work on it

That badger sporran looks great. I might be out of my league, trying to make one that I'd be proud to wear.

It really is easy, just think about how to assembly it.
put it together a few times in your head before you start

If you get into trouble just send me a PM

I hand sew all my leather work using an awl ,harness neddles, and waxed lined thread.all available at a leather store for less than $25.00
