A Sport Kilt Dilema
Hey all,
First off, I know that many here are not fans of Sport Kilt. Having one myself I must admit it is probably my least favorite kilt but I don't hold as much comtempt for it a some folks here seem to have. That being said, here is my dilema:
Sport Kilt has recently added the Nova Scotia tartan to their current line. As fate would have it, this is the tartan that my pipe band wears. I will eventually be measured for a tank in this tartan but understandably it will be at a later time when new kilts are ordered for all new band members. Then of course we're going to be looking at the time it takes while they are made for me to jones some more. My thoughts are I could order one of these with the fringe added and pleats sewn down. The average joe watching from the side probably won't have the first clue that this isn't a tank. I'm also strongly considering letting my pipe major and quartermaster know about these.
I suppose my main question is: Does anyone here have one of these kilts with the sewn pleats and fringe? Do you think it would work as an "interim kilt" until I get the real deal?
I welcome any and all advice from my kilted brethern here and would especially like to hear from the pipers.
Thanks!

I figure it this way. The tartan is the same you wear for the band. Get the kilt, and at worst you can practice in it, and will have a kilt to wear when you are afraid something might happen to it ( mud wrestling, noodleing, etc.). this way you will relieve the ever-present jonesing for a few days, and have another kilt!
who knows, maybe it will pass as acceptable to pipe in!

Personnaly if I were ordering a Canadian tartan, I would go with a Canadian kilt maker ( http://www.canadiancasualkilts.com/ ) that could get the Nova Scotia tartan and is a member of this forum. If I am not mistaken, MacHummell can get this in Poly/viscose. Maybe he will add more for us?
I know he did this one

Have you asked the "Pipey" (Pipe Major)?
I would check with your quartermaster/drum major/pipe major/band official and see what they think -- someone might have a loaner kilt.

You are not mistaken, He does have the Nova Scotia in PV. I have one, love it and am wearing it right now!

No loaners for me.
Nope, no loaner kilt, at least not in my size. I'm one of about 3 or 4 that have to wear a different tartan. A total of maybe 7 or 8 of us will actually need to get the kilts when they do the next mass order. I believe that they do actually get them from a Canadian kilt maker.
Here are a couple other things to ponder.
-The lighter fabric may be a blessing during the South Carolina summer months.
-The elastic waist band may allow for it to be a loaner kilt to another new band member until they get their tank.
Just some more fuel for the fire.

sounds like the decision has already been made. I have yet to see a reason not to get the kilt posted.

For about the same price, actually a little less, you could get a USAK casual in PV, and the velcro on the casuals allow a similar size flexibility. Just not sure if Rocky can get the NS tartan.

I'm a huge fan of SportKilt .... get the kilt as an interim, then you'll have one to wear to those wild piper parties once you get the more expensive, hotter official kilt that you can't spill beer on.
SportKilt is wash and wear, so get it dirty, man!!
Kilt On!
