It grieves me deeply to share that one of the finest songsmiths of my country has left us. Grant McLennan died on Saturday 6th may of a heart attack at the age of 48. Grant was the primary singer/songwriter the cult pop band Go-Betweens which started in the early 80's, disbanded in 1989 with the release of the album 16 Lovers Lane and reformed in 2000 with the release of Friends of Rachael Worth. They won an Aria for their most recently released album Bright Yellow, Bright Orange. Grant McLennan recorded and released four solo records one of which was a double album, Horsebreaker Star which in my opinion is sublime, hilarious and golden. Grant's music has had a deeply powerful imact on my life through his insights and ability to encapsulate a particularly Australian generations' difficulty to empower itself in an increasingly ambiguous world. I Hoped to play music with him some day. Maybe a day far off now... There will be a public service held at St Johns Anglican Cathedral, Anne St, Brisbane at 1.30 on Friday, 12th May. IT'S DUSTY IN HERE like a ghost a ghost of something old it's cold and dusty in here just twenty years and six feet down I'm told I know your face I share your name in the dark when shadows have their way a finger's a chimney and the moon's on fire then sleep arrives he's got his bags and wares the dragon sleeps and St. George stares you won't write, no you won't write that's all I ask, that you just write and you say no, that you can't speak you've lost your voice, you let it go you let it go like a ghost a ghost of something old it's cold and dusty in here it's in your hand it sits just like a glove the finger traces the lines of love it's cold and dusty in here someone you knew is watching you I'm someone you knew GM . rest in Peace my brother.
