Who knows hose?
Okay, I 've got a pair of Lovat blue kilt hose that I bought solely because I like the color. Initially I thought they would look good with my tank and they do but What other tartans would they work with. I'll be honest, I'm terrible at color matching. I have the following tartans to choose from:
Anderson (thats my tank), Black Watch, Weathered Lamont, Nova Scotia, Black Stewart, Pride of Scotland.
Thanks!!!

Hamish rule #4...match the hose to the shirt, but make sure both compliment the tartan. Lovat is a hard color to find in shirts, but you can come close with good suppliers like Land's End and Cabela's. Don't forget that you can get white cotton polos and dye them with Rit dye...play with the mixture and some scrap material until you get the color just right.
Not sure about some of the tartans you mentioned, but definitely don't wear Lovat with Black Watch.

When it comes to color matching I always go to my most reliable source - the ladies that I work with. They will pick apart any outfit whether it has to do with the kilt or matching hose with shirts or ties. They are brutally honest at times and have harrassed me about shirts and ties I own but they still have better sense than me. It may be sexist but so far it has worked out.

The lovat hose seem to work really well with the ancient tartans. The modern tartans will work from time to time depending on the tartan, but the faded look of the ancient really gets complimented by the lovat hose (green or blue depending on tartan). I don't think there is a set list of what tartans will work with the hose, but rather just a trial and error approach. I would take Black Watch off the list though, the lovat hose don't look so great (that I have tried or seen) with the darkness of the Black Watch tartan.

Anderson and Nova Scotia, I'd say.

So many of us have asked or read about which hose match what...
I have come up with a solution....
Perhaps there is a need for 'garanimals' like tags for kilts and accessories...
If the animals on the tags match - the colors go together!!

What works best with Black Watch
Bottle Green,Black or Navy Blue?

The correct answer is D) None of the above. You'll end up looking too dark in the nether regions ("Bottom-heavy"), especially when you lace on a pair of black shoes.
Oatmeal is my choice with Black Watch. Gray or stone is a close second, but avoid all the really dark colors.
