Comments on first time kilted

I would like to sincerely thank all of those here whose posts helped me reach the point I could purchase a kilt and wear it proudly.

Stillwater standard nightstalker, nylon SWK sporran, overstocked SWK belt, overstock kiltpin. The kilt is great. If you look very closely, every stitch and cut isn't straight, and I can see where a custom made would hang a little better, but overall, a great buy IMO for $80. The sporran is very usable with the zippered pouches; I stole a nylon belt w/ hooks off a cooler, and it looks fine. The belt... I can't really find anything wrong w/ it, so a steal at $9, and the pin, also a great buy at $5, it looks like they used too much glue to attach the lion to the sword, but you would have to be pretty darn close to tell.

I was VERY nervous on my first time out, which was a continental breakfast at a hotel; made me realize how self-conscious I really am. Got some good comments and got used to some funny glances.

Does anyone else find themselves looking for pockets to put their hands in? Also trying to replace my wallet/keys into non-existant pockets was funny.

I almost flashed people in a strong breeze, and did in fact flash at the movie theater. I stood up quickly and when the seat back flew up, it took the rear of the kilt with it!

You WILL be wanded in airport security, and now I understand the "right foot in, left foot out" dance others have addressed. The plane ride was very comfortable, with very minimal creases in the pleats.

My over-riding thought while wearing my new kilt was, It just feels RIGHT!

Glad you are getting the feel of a kilt. You feel the wind, the glances, and how you feel about yourself.

I have had the theater seat experinece too and it surprised me. I am not sure what you mean about the air port "dance" as I probably missed that post. What is it?

Welcome and keep enjoying your kilt. Don't you have a sporan, or did you mean because you are used to pockets?

Congrats on your first time out. It only gets more and more enjoyable over time. It took me a while to get used to having no pockets also.

Confidence and comfort with the kilt grows with experience. How people in public are able to sense this in others is not always obvious but you've taken the first big step in developing it. Be relaxed and natural and others will be too. If it fees right, then do it!

About five years ago I started making bagpipes and a local TV station did a little story about them. A buddy of mine was making kilts and I asked him if I could borrow one just for a day. He said 'No, you gotta buy in to the whole kilt thing. No posers.' I said fine, and figured I'd buy one and return it Monday and get my money back. Even though my family was Scottish and my uncle wore a kilt when playing his pipes, I'd never thought of wearing a kilt. I thought they were silly.

So I wore it for the day, and it was incredibly comfortable. That night there was a party at Utilikilts that I went to. The next night I met a bunch of friends at a bar for a party in memory of a close friend who'd died a few months previous. The bartender couldn't keep her fingers off it, and a couple other girls kept reaching under it. I was married at the time, so I couldn't do anything, but I certainly had opportunity...

The next day was a Monday and I wore it to work. My guys gave me a little crap, but my customers thought it was cool (I had a boat business at the time). That night I went home and threw my pants in the dumpster and told my wife, 'I'm never wearing pants again!'

She left me two weeks later. It was for the best.

[by the way- I work at Utilikilts. I run the factory, and I don't have ANYTHING to do with UK's politics or customer relations. I just make kilts, and I love it. I'm here because I heard about you guys after the gun thing and I'm a dedicated kilt wearing, full-blooded Scot who's overly proud of it. Cheers.]

Man, if I had known that all I had to do to get rid of my ex-wife sooner was to wear a kilt, I'd had done it YEARS ago!
