W Brewins - Watch the Sales Tax!

A tip for those ordering from W Brewins from outside of UK/EEC.

The 29.99 special, for 10 pairs of hose, INCLUDES sales tax (VAT). It is normal practice (the law) to display prices inclusive of sales tax in the UK, if sold to the general public.

If you order from outside the EEC, for instance USA, or Canada, or Australia, etc., that that price should be adjusted to an price without VAT. On W Brewins site this does not happen.

So on my recent 29.99 order from them, I was implicitly charged 6.99 tax (on the 29.99 + 16.95 delivery).

I emailed W Brewins, and they confirmed the error, and told me they will refund the 6.99.

Let me recap that, as the UK system is quite different. Sales tax in the UK (VAT) is not an extra amount added, but built into the price. If they charge 29.99 to sell to UK/EEC residents, the correct price to non-EEC residents (like USA, Canada, Australia, etc) is 29.99/1.175 = 25.52. The airmail postage should be 16.95/1.175 = 14.43.

    So I should have been charged 25.52 + 14.43 = 39.95, and not 29.99 + 16.95 = 46.94, a difference of 6.99

If you've been charged the full, sales tax inclusive price, just email them and ask for the VAT back.

I had to get up at 0300 and call the company to see where my kilthose were and found that they hadn't been sent yet after almost two months and I mentioned the VAT and they said they would take it off before mailing the hose, unfortunately, although they had not sent my hose they had already billed my card so now that has to be unraveled.

Speaking of tax, how many here have off road vehicles and/or motorboats?

    Chris.

Nice, but I meant OFF road vehicles and boats, vehicles that were never meant for the roads but use gasoline, I have some infomation that I have used for years that I want to pass on to you all. Who all have boats and OFF road vehicles? Maybe I can help you save enough for a "Tank".

Well, it seems that nobody has any off-road vehicles or no one wants to answer my post but I'll tell you anyway, when you fill your boat or ORV do you get a receipt? I do. After filling up my 'whatever' that is NOT a road use vehicle for the entire year I send in a claim for a refund of all the tax money that I paid on the gas. I didn't use it ON ROAD and the taxes on a gallon of gasoline are for using the roads of our country. If you aren't using the gasoline for highway use why pay gasoline tax for an off road vehicle or boat? If you all consider how much some states like California charge for a gas tax it all adds up and you have a savings plan for a new kilt or sporran or belt or...

    Get it?

A further update on W Brewins.

First, they have NOT refunded my sales tax, despite saying they would do so almost two weeks ago. Very naughty!

Second, my order arrived with a totally incorrect declared customs value. What they seem to have done is include in the customs value the following
    • the sales tax that I should not have been charged
    • the postage charge, which should not have been included in the customs value, as it's not part of the value of the goods being delivered.
In all, I am out about C$30. I am not worried as I can dispute this through the various credit card resolution procedures.

Until this company can sort out its international shipping procedures, and its customer service, I will be avoiding them!

I'll let you know if W Brewin explains themselves.
