A New Question at Memorial Day Services

It cooled off a tad out here, down to about 70 degrees F. So put on my new Broadswoard Jacobite shirt with my Cameron Black and Red from Kathy Lare and headed off to our local Memorial Day ceremony down at the cemetery

The V.F.W. did the ceremony and did a fine job. Only about 100 people there and vets from age 40 to age 81.

Afterward, as folks were milling around chatting a Navajo guy came up from behind me and asked very politely, "Were you in the Foreign Legion?"

Apparently he'd been studying me and trying to figure out what sort of a veteran I was.

And yes, the kilt is twisted a tad too far right in the pic...straightened it out before I sallied forth.

My reply is not kilt-related, but your story reminds me of a time myself and some buddies were travelling to a Civil War reenactment in a remote rural part of Virginia. We were all in our blue 1860's Federal infantry uniforms for the trip. At one point we stopped at a run-down gas station in the middle of nowhere. As we piled out of the car, the lad working there in greasy overalls gaped at us. His question: "Are y'all a baseball team?"

Ah, but does that story bring back memories!

I remember one time a similar incident happening when our artillery crew from the battlefield was travelling to a living history event with our cannon; when asked at a gas station who we were, one of us replied: "we're from a militant Amish sect".

And, that's one of the things bugs me about tucking in your shirt. (Another thread, I know).
Straighten out the Kilt and you feel like you're constantly turning left the rest of the day.

Years ago, hitch-hiking, I got picked up by this guy. He insisted we had served together as mercenaries in the Belgian Congo. Too weird and scary for me, I got out of there as soon as I could.

Being a Virginian, I can speak his language. He was just asking "are ye Yankees?" Back in those hills, you guys are lucky he didn't pull out his Springfield musket, let out a rebel yell and charge.
