Bonnets
My prototype bonnet. Call it a caubeen, Balmoral or Tam. Slight modifications make it any of those. Add a toorie and wider headband, Balmoral. Change the orientation, add a toorie and "ovalize" it slightly, Regimental Tam O'Shanter. This is my 12 year old daughter. I have to teach her how to smile.
One mistake...fabric is inside out. Shows the twill weave too much. The other face of the fabric would be better. The wife likes the Emerald colour...I'm not thrilled with it. The O'Brien badge is hand embroidered, PEI tartan backing.
This is actually the same weight as the Inverness fabric.

i like it!
Not too jazzed about the color....but I like the fact that the weave shows up. It makes the hat look a bit more rustic. I bet it'd look awesome in heather grey.

The emerald isn't my cup of tea either. I'm thinking any less bright colour. On the other hand, my daughter has claimed it, and won't take it off. Lovat blue and green, black, navy, tan would suit better. Doing one up over the next couple of days in Air Force Blue. That one will be mine.
Heather grey is on the agenda, seeing as one of the boys who ordered an Inverness asked about matching bonnet as well. There is also the ribbon on the headband and tails missing.
I think, maybe, if the weave was rotated 90deg, it would look better, but this is 3-ply wool, heavily napped. I shaved it down with my hair clippers.

Maybe that green will be a nice "hunter" green or SF green?

nah...i like it the way it is....the way the two weaves come together along the front edge. Where the top meets the body? (look at the very first pic) it reminds me of a feather. I really dig it. How do you size a hat like this?

Cav,
yepper. Join the SF and wear the Green Caubeen. I'll be dyeing some tomorrow. If the damned camera keeps working, I'll get a swatch pic up.
For a Balmoral or Tam, I'd lower the under-crown a tad as well. I embroidered the badge too, got bored the other night.
Cloves,
Actually, I meant it to look that way. Maybe I'm just being critical. Sizing, just wrap a tape measure around your head, Inches or cms.
Hey, you gonna be in Summerside on the 23rd to 25th? Highland Gathering.

Aye, that'll be my charcoal heather bonnet ye be talkin about. The emerald one looks just as fine as all of your work that I have seen. I'll take a caubeen straight up, no toorie or tails if you please. Yarrr....
I've kilt for less.

Cloves, just tell yer old man he needs a new kilt, from a home-grown kiltmaker. FYI, you must know who Bruce MacNaughton is? Island Preserves? He's coming up next week for a fitting! Seems he needs a new kilt.
