On the History channel
They ran a program called "Distilleries" It was a very nice program about making all kinds of spirits.. My personal favorite was when they covered Scotch!! In one part they had a Scotch tasting and there were some fine kilted lads enjoying the golden nectar!!

That episode of Modern Marvels was very informative. I originally saw it when aired as part of a 3 hour marathon with episodes on coffee, distilleries, and breweries (covered a lot of microbrews and regionals as well as the national guys.) Ahh, the 3 best things to drink.

I would exclude coffee, but add Coca-Cola, sweet tea, Cheerwine (a southeast favorite), Mt. Dew, and Irn Bru.
Yet . . . A good Scotch trumps all!
Moonshine, well, I've not had enough to say.

Two of those three I would really enjoy. The other one would be a downright pleasure.

Sidebar - no, not that kind
A friend recently saw a program on PBS related to the Gaelic region (for lack of a better term) in which the narrator stated "in the ancient gaelic language Scotland meant "land of the Irish". I'm attempting to find out more about this, interesting if in fact true.
Back to your regularly scheduled bar now ...

Well, the Scots-Irish were the primary early settlers of western North Carolina- could that have something to do with why it's the Moonshine Capital of the world?

The program was good on how distilleries work and the differences between types of distilled beverages, including bourbon, wine/grape based drinks, tennessee wiskey, tiquila, gin, others, and (my choice) Scotch. Generally, each is made out of different bases. It also covers the history of how and why various ones were made and their intertwined history. It is VERY interesting and I would recommend one watching it next time around.
It even urged/inspired/tempted me to restock my supplies, which should last me several months.
As for moonshine, I've tried a few (including the one LEGAL brand-> "Georgia Moonshine"), but am and will remain weary of most. My father's uncle got hold of some bad shine and went blind back in the 50s. I'd rather not take my chances, unless I am ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT in its source. The legal one tastes very much like corn. The others have varied drastically, with the best tasting like a sweeted single malt scotch.
Historically, and reiterated in the program, homemade whisky is DIRECTLY tied to scotch, especially that which was evading revenuers there, as well as here. It drew arms as well, ever heard of the "Whiskey Rebellion" (put down by Gen. Washington)?

As far as moonshine goes, if it isn't perfectly clear and odorless, don't drink it.
