As many of you can remember, my partner (soon to be be spouse) Nopadon has always stated that he did not want me to buy a solid-color or contemporary kilt. He fully supports my wearing and purchasing traditional kilts, and even tolerates my rather extravagant expenditures on tanks, but he felt that solid kilts or kilts with pockets were a definite no.

Well, last weekend was Capitol Pride and while we were there he saw lots of guys wearing Utilikilts. Nopadon had to admit that they looked nice. So by the time we got to the UK booth he was ready to let me try one on.

I was a little bit put off by some of the staff. They kept trying to get me to buy a UK that was way too big. One guy looked at me and said, "oh you definitely need a 46." I protested, the waist on my made-to-measure kilts aren't even 40! but he grabbed a 46 off the rack and threw it around my waist. It was laughable. Even though I was wearing a full kilt, belt & sporran underneath, I could still fit both fists inside the buttoned UK!

Now since I was in a chair and only standing up long enough to quickly try something on, I couldn't exactly maneuver easily within the tent to get on my size, especially since there were lots of others inside shopping at the same time. I was almost completely dependent on the staff to get kilts for me. But finally I was able to get them down to a more reasonable size in an original black UK. It has that odd waist feature where there are no closures just at the waist, so I thought it was the perfect size once I got a belt on. Well, I'm now feeling that it might be a bit too big still. All those tall workers just wanted me to be fatter than I really am!

But the important part is that I was able to buy a UK in solid black without getting myself in trouble. And I am enjoying wearing it.

So now I just have wait a little while and I can really start boosting the size of my kilt collection!
