Selkirk & Jedburgh - All in my morning's work

My first call this morning was at the 19th century Selkirk Sheriff Court House to deal with a custody case:-

    Selkirk Sheriff Court

The view from the parapet outside the court house, looking over the Ettrick Valley would be a fine one but for the mist and low cloud.

A hundred yards further up is the old Court House where Sir Walter Scott presided as Sheriff. It is now a museum.

The statue of Sir Walter Scott is the centre piece of Market Square.

Market Square, Selkirk, is also the home of the Selkirk Bannock

Then on to Jedburgh Sheriff Court House to lodge papers for another case. The main builidng is late 19th century but the Bridewell Jail on the left dates from 1755.

Jedburgh Abbey is adjacent to the Sheriff Court House.

An end on view of Jedburgh Abbey

Many of Jedburgh's buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries and were modernised during the 20th century to provide ground floor shops and houses above. The flags are for the Jethart Callant's Festival which takes place this week.

Directly across from the entrance to the Court is Prince Charlie's House, so named because Prince Charles Edward Stuart stayed here in 1745.

    Great pictures!

Forgive my complete ignorance and don't be offended, but is Jedburgh Abbey a.....well, what is it, anyway? Okay....I looked on the web and it said it's a very old church in a state of disrepair.....but why is there no roof on that structure? I'm still confused.....that part of the structure looks like a grand outdoor hallway of sorts.

Anyway, looking at your pictures made my head hurt because I always wish those buildings could speak. The stories they could tell! When I am in the presence of those buildings I always wonder who at some point in history might have been standing in the same spot I am occupying and what happened there.

Here in Phoenix everything sprang into being after the 1950's (when the goverment said central air could be included in the mortgage for a home ) so we have almost NO historic buildings here.

I really must get over to Europe one of these days... I have relatives in Sweden and the farm where my dad grew up is still in the family

OH! I almost forget....the Selkirk Sheriff Court House was breathtaking. WOW!!!
