Goin' to the Con...kilted, of course.

Och...I just remembered that Wizard World - the Comic Con event here in Chicago - is on for Saturday. My dear comic-book-store-employee son will be working at it for a change...sell those back issues, boy! But, of course, daughter and I will attend...I'm hoping to talk my wife into it but I am insisting that she has to dress appropriately...anybody seen any Bat-Girl costumes in a womens' size twelve?

So that means trying to combine the world of comics and the kilt...I'm looking at a sort of Men-In-Black-gunfighter-Firefly-kilted look...don't worry, it'll be tasteful...I wouldn't embarass the Kilted Brethren by looking TOO nutsy. I've been threatening my kids that I'll get a genuine super-hero spandex Flash costume and wear it to the con...it's the idea of spandex on my ever-widening middle aged body that has them frightened. Fat Spiderman was there a few years ago...and to his credit, the guy wore the suit the whole day and never once broke character...now there was a guy with testicular fortitude!

So if you're a renegade alien or an eccentric evil genius or a hideously disfigured super villian, I guess that Wizard World would be a convenient place to hide out for a few days...nobody would ever pick you out of this crowd.

And I really hope that Batman tries to come up sith some snide comment about my kilt...then I can say, "...I'm wearing a SKIRT? Hey, buddy, you're the one wearing his UNDERPANTS on the OUTSIDE of his outfit!"

And I promise pictures...too good to pass up! Kenner always has a giant Star Wars action figure package that you can stand in and strike a pose with one of the many Star Wars weapons that they keep on hand...Obi Wan KILT-obi, here I come!

AA, sounds like fun. Where is it held? Since I have the advantage of height on you, I will go for a Darth Vader look. Are you sure your tall enough for Obi-wan? I was thinking more Yoda!!

    Sorry, could not resist!

    Thanks, KCW...

...and these are my friends...? Yoda? I've got to get more sun...

Seriously...it's at the Rosemont Convention Center...we've been going for years. It's always a hoot even if you just go to hang out and check out the folks who do show up dressed...I think there were at least three Willie Wonkas last year in varying degree of costume excellence. We're just fans...I always get to see the gang from Graveyard Theatre (which I can no longer get on broadcast TV, dammit!) Laslo, Renfield and Demonica...I love these dudes because they are keeping the tradition of cheesy late night bad horror movie hosts alive. There's always a stand selling weaponry (of Far- Eastern origin...think Pakistan...) and LOTS of teenagers who you really wouldn't want to see with a sword hangng around and testing the heft of various implements of destruction...that's more frightening than Fat Spiderman. One company that sells the best light sabers (although they dan't officially call them that) you ever saw...rather pricey but really authentic.

What can I say? It's a geekfest and I'm always there, so what does that tell you?

I've worn my kilt at San Diego Comicon International and believe me you will have to work to stand out in the type of crowds that comic book conventions attract

Have fun, and take lots of fanservice pics

You know, interestingly enough, that Klingon's vest looks like it was made from the upholstery from my Uncle John's '59 Pontiac.

There is a sci-fi / fantasy convention near the Seattle airport every Easter weekend, Norwescon, that I go to. Kilts there have always been in plentiful supply; in fact, that is where I saw my first (dozen or more) Utilikilts and decided to give them a try.
