Question about Scottish Lloyd tartans....

Hi everyone. I'm an Irish McLloyd, however many people in my family, just use the shortened form of Lloyd. I was looking online thru a list of tartans and found of course the Welsh Lloyd tartan, but also a Lloyd of Dolobran, and Lloyd of Astargus listed under Scottish tartans. Could someone tell me anything about these tartans? I might very well consider getting a Scottish one at some point, and just wondered if anyone knew anything of this.

Nice question. From what I quickly found, there might be a tie to the County/Distrcit of Ulbster. Also stating that the Lloyd's (same name as McLloyd by the way) migrated from Scotland and England to Ulbster, Ireland. Looks like you might have several tartan options. Check out the Ulbster Tartans. One is called Ulbster Red and happens to be very attractive.

Now I'm not saying the above as fact, of course your own personal genealogy will be more accurate. For Irish names, most tie to district/county tartans anyway (as I understand it). There is also the Irish National Tartan to consider. It sounds like you want to be real authentic. I would determine which county your Irish ancestors came from, and go with that tartan. Now, that's if your trying to go authentic.

Lloyd of Dolobran = seems to originate from 1950 MacGregor Hastie collection. The older of the three from your list.

Lloyd of Astargus = 2001

Lloyd of Wales = 2002

I used the Scottish Tartans Society and Authority websites for the above info..

anyway, gotta go, dinner time...

And of course, you can wear any tartan you like, there are no laws.

I mean Ulster, Ireland. Not Ulbster as in Ulbster in Caithness Scotland... Sorry!
I wouldn't want you to look up the wrong spelling..

Welcome, and nice question. Tartans and their designation are modern inventions. If you like a tartan, wear it. I prefer to have some connection with the tartans I wear. There are many territorial tartans and several universal tartans.

Many more recently-designed tartans with the names of families are personal tartans designed by an individual for personal use. Most will allow others with the same surname to use them.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I appericate it greatly. I've looked into some of the Lloyd tartans, and will most likely not get them soon. I'm rather cheap truth be told, and cant afford it right now.(the joys of being a college student ha). If anyone has a suggestion on where to find a good priced Irish province kilt it would be appericated, as I'm Irish thru and thru. Though, I do have one Scotch ancestor, so perhaps I'll get the Stewart tartan. Peace everyone.

Welcome to the forum. If you have traced your McLloyd ancestors back to Ulster, Ireland, you are probably Scots-Irish and your ancestors were most likely Irish of Scots descent. Many of the Scots who emigrated to the US during the early to mid 1700's were from the Ulster region of Ireland.

If you are interested in this story, get a copy of James Leyburn's great book "The Scotch Irish". It should be on the shelf at Barnes & Noble.

For the money, I would recommend buying an Ireland's National from USA Kilts . You can get a casual model for a GREAT price. I have one and I love it to death. Be careful though. Rocky (USAK owner) puts an addictive chemical in his tartans! Once you strap one on, you'll want another and another and ANOTHER!
