Glasgow world band piping championships
My wife & I attended the Glasgow world piping championships yesterday (Sat 12thAug). What an atmosphere it was electric, Pipe bands from everywhere, Canada, Pakistan,Spain, Ireland & of course Scotland. There where also the highland games, where were to see a world record set by the Russian athlete of 19ft over the high bar( thats as high as the bar would go ). we had a great day we talked to lots of people, also bought a couple of new kilt pins for my new kilt soon to arrive.
Here are some pictures we took.
Band tuning up
Marching band
Band in arena
Spanish band
Some of the costumes were beautiful

David,
Fabulous pictures. I am really jealous! It has long been my dream to attend the World Pipe Band Championships but the distance from home for such a short event always seems to deter me. I have a DVD of last year's Championships which I am constantly playing - that's as close as I've managed to get - yet!

That's what I was just thinking, David. I've just been looking at several of the WPBC websites - there is a great promotional video clip at
http://www.gotoglasgow.com/index.htm which is well worth a look.
Perhaps we could have an X Marks gathering there next year!! Whilst I have been to Edinburgh countless times (I just adore the place), I have never visited Glasgow. Yes, I AM ashamed, but maybe can rectify the situation next August.

I was just wondering about that also...all those Xmarkers travelling through Scotland and all those lovely wee meetings. We really must be able to plan something bigger....well in advance. This event or whatever other event.
I was thinking of next year's Burns Supper myself

These are wonderful photos. I have a 2 CD set of last years championships and it's been getting lot of play lately.
I thought it was interesting that non-highland attire was permitted at the event. The rules of the North American Chamiopnships state that highland attire is required and no player will be permitted past the marshal without a hat... and that includes women.
Tell us a bit about the glass building in the background of the 1st photo... it's beautiful.
I presume there must have been a massed band at the end of the day. How many bands attended? Were there many bands from Canada in attendance?
One of these days, time and money permitting, I'd love to do a whisky tour and take in the World Championships on the same trip. Wouldn't be for a couple of years... in the meantime, I'll have to settle for a disc and a bottle.
