Messing With Young Minds
A new reaction...just when I thought I'd heard everything.
The agency I work at is on the edge of the mesa the city is on. Below are housing tracts. Kids climb the mesa to reach the elementary and high school across the street from the agency. In the process they cut through our parking lot.
So I've just pulled into the parking lot, parked my car in a space on the edge of the mesa, and am walking to the main door.
Two Navajo kids, I'd guess about 3rd or 4th grade topped the mesa when I'm about halfway across the parking lot. They're looking at me from behind. Long hair to my waist, and a kilt.
I hear one say to the other, "Its a woman." The other says, "No." So I just turned around to face them so they could see my beard, and smiled.
How could they miss the hairy calves? Maybe the swish of the kilt distracted them....and how many women are 6 foot 250 lbs??
Guess the one's mind was just programmed - unbifurcated equals female.
Hopefully it was a cultural learning experience.

I had a mother today bend down and say out loud to her young daughter "Look, there's a man in a skirt", talking of messing with young minds!
I yelled out "It's a KILT!!!!"
Then later a group of young people laughed at me as I walk past. I missed an opportunity to ask them which was sillier...a man wearing a comfortable, healthy garment - or a young boy sitting there sucking on a concoction of over 100 dangerous chemicals (cigarette)?
Something about 'he who laughs last...' came to mind. ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
All in a day's kilting!

Great interaction Ron. Those are some of the most enjoyable. And with my move, I have a whole new audience to educate about kilt wearing.

Sounds similar to what happened to me today. I was walking through the office wearing my UK and a woman looked at me and said, "Is Friday skirt day?" I smiled and said "Yep!" and kept on walking. But when I sat down at my desk I overheard a couple of other women correcting her saying, "No, no it's a kilt." Score one for the home team!

I AM guilty of messing with adult minds. I've been addressed as Ma'am while in the mens room, I've posted the incident before but here it is for all the newbies. This happend a year ago, when I first started wearing kilts.
I was in the mens room today washing my hands.(I was wearing a workmans UK).My back was to the door when it started opening, then someone said "Oh, excuse me!" and left before I could say anything. About thirty seconds later it opened a little and the same person said"Ma'am this is the mensroom". That got my attention and I glanced over at the stalls.Nope, I was alone. So I said "theres no women in here." The only reply I got was the door shutting. The whole thing took only about a minute. I never did see his face and by the time I got my hands dry and left he was gone.I could tell from the tone of his voice that it wasn't just someone messing with me.

I was shopping in my local ASDA (Wallmart UK) store yesterday when a lady came up to me and told me that her daughter had asked why "that man was wearing a skirt."
I advised her to correct her daughter and tell her that it was a kilt which is a male garment.
