Great work/Kilt news
It has been a while since I have been able to post. My youngest son says that I spend to much time on the computer and not enough with him, so I have been making an effort to only check emails in the morning and at night. It works out.
But to the great news. I have been wanting for severl months now to focus all of my energy into a coffee shop of my own. I am spending less time on the Ambulance and have been hired at a local Starbucks. By the Grace of God and Chesty Puller, in the following year, I will have my own place. I am in turmoil over the name. My wife likes "Highland Coffee" but I am more partial to "Infidels coffee and hookah bar". She will most likely win.
The manager at Starbucks has said that she has no issue with me wearing a kilt to work. Women are allowed to wear an all black or all tan skirt, and she sees no reason why men cannot wear an all black or all tan kilt. Now I need to buy an all black kilt. The tan one Jeff made for me at pittsburgh kilts is tan and MARPAT. Bolox. The manager at Starbucks is going to check with the District Manager just to make sure, and I will find out on 16 October, my first day.
I will of course keep you all informed, and if I do get to wear my kilt, I will post photos of wearing it at Starbucks.
Cheers

That's good (and suprising) news!
I don't believe Starbucks employees in Seattle are allowed that option. I know they are pretty strict about visible piercings and tattoos.
Anxious to hear how it plays out.

You know that we're all going to be waiting to see how you decorate the place.
Best of luck on your enterprise.

Yeah, but Starbucks is basically McDonalds...they succeeded by making it middle-of-the-road and consistant from location to location. Coffee shops should be local, eccentric and comfortable for everybody. If you build it, they will come....they may nurse a latte for a couple of hours and you'll wish they'd leave so you'd have the table free, but they will come...

Good for you Jay, my sister owned her own coffee shop for a few years. As for a name, do you want it to be kilt related, or product related? Is the kilt going to be the gimmick for the shop, or simply something the owner wears?
It seems like a lot of people on the forum try and work "kilt" or "highlander" into the name of their business, license plate, etc, etc, etc. How often does that actually depict what the business does though? Please bear in mind, I am not trying to pooh-pooh the idea, only bringing up the marketing training. Something Scottish or Irish theme would be cool, and could incorpurate the kilts and the business plan, but without making the kilt the main attraction. While Kilted Coffee sounds cool to me, how many non kilted people are going to be drawn to that? Is a niche market being created that may not be there to support the business? Some examples:
Stag's Head coffee
Cuppa
It would also be cool to use some of your experiences in the middle east to find a name.
Just playing devil's advocate. Good Luck, it sounds like a great plan.

There was a cafe called "Kilted Coffee" in Minneapolis that planned to have the entire staff in kilts, I don't know what the story was, but the business never opened, or was only open for a short time before closing its doors, I suspect it was under-capitalized. Too bad, it seemed like a nice place in a good location.
I actually met one of the owners (a Utilikilt-wearer) and saw the place right before it was set to open.

What great news on all fronts, Jay!
As for a name, what about something cheesy along the lines of "Scotty McBean's"?

It's cool to have a boss with open mind.
