    Night at the opera

Recently I was attending Porgy & Bess. I was in my solid black kilt and I was dressed in black all the way. Black kilt hose, black flash, you get the picture. During intermission I went down to the Mezzanine level to strech my legs and look at the paintings. I heard a man say "It's different Baby. It's called a kilt" Then a few seconds later he said "I don't know Baby. Ask him." I looked over to see a cute little girl about 8 or 9 in her best dress, white gloves and white handbag. I smiled and asked "got a question?" She looked a little scared that I had spoken. The father said "She wants to know what that thing is hanging from your belt in front is and I don't know what it's called." I looked back and said "It's called a sporren." "Why do you have it?" she asked. "Well," I said "your dress doesn't have any pockets does it?" She shook her head. "That's why you have a purse, right?" She nodded. Well a kilt doesn't have any pockets either. So this is where I keep my stuff." I opened it & showed her. "O! ok!" she said. Daddy said "well that clears THAT up." & smiled.

Now I wanna know .... if you're going to take a kid to the opera why Porgy & Bess? I'd take 'em to Ahmal & the Night Visitors. Much more kid frendly.

Because a Gershwin masterwork is way better than a Menotti made-for-TV musical.

    Regards,
Rex in Cincinnati, who, in college, landed the role of "The Page" in Amahl - both an operatic debut and swan song.

At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

Such innocence of youth seems to be increasingly rare these days.

    Great story.
