I was just wondering the same thing! I've got a Leatherneck tartan Sportkilt---which I really like, by the way, but which I would NOT wear to the ball. (I'd jump into the Ramsay USA Semi-trad and use my subdued corporal's chevrons as a kilt pin.)

Rather than sidestep the issue... This might be a good excuse and time to invest in a nice jacket.

You might wear it only a few times a year, but the room will shine in your path when you do.

I am new here but I have been wearing kilts for 40 years.

Jacket and sporran - I would agree and say bite the bullet. There are very few jackets that work with a kilt that are not designed with them in mind. An exception is a white mess dress jacket that I pickedd up from a uniform company that supplies to cruise ships. Works great in the summer. If the bite is a bit much right now consider renting the jacket and sporran. I have had friends who only bought a kilt for highland games who rented a jacket when they need it.

Kilt pin - anything you line but your rank insignia would be nice choice too.

Shirt - if this is a formal ball then the shirt is a white, tux shirt with a black bow tie (one you tie). The shirt can be either a plain or pleated front but many prefer a plain front if you use a prince charlie and waistcoat and a pleated shirt if you get a an argyle jacket. If you go with an argyle jacket (a good choice since it can be used for less formal occaisions as well) you could choose a long formal tie (tux style) instead of a bowtie. As for the collar it doesn't really matter; I prefer a standard collar personally.

Consider a belt if you get an argyle jacket and no waistcoat but you won't need it if you go with a prince charlie set.

Welcome Chef. And I would agree with this. Everything I've seen about the USMC Ball is that it is formal. An Argyll as above or a PC would be your best bets. You can either rent or purchase what you don't have and not break the bank. I just ordered an Argyll from what was Hector Russell in San Francisco and at 270 that's not bad. Don't have it yet but....

Here is a link to a Navy Mess Dress Jacket. It's 219.00. You would save about $100 on the price of a 100% wool PC or Argyl. It looks spendind with a kilt. Because of the higher waist of the kilt you will not need a cumberbund, but you should wear a belt. This jacket is for more formal occasions. If you want an excellent all around jacket, spend the extra for an Argyl.
White shirt with whichever collar suits you. Black bowtie is the norm but since it is the MC ball you might want to opt for a red one. Some MC officers as well as some of the Naval Officers that attend will wear a red one to honor the Corps.
If you are unable to aquire a jacket in time, wear a white long sleeve dress shirt (not a formal shirt w/ruffles) and bowtie. I'd opt for the red in that case.

Agreed it is a great jacket. Very similar to the white one I have and they do work great with kilts.

However I am not sure that a USMC Ball is the right place to be using a uniform jacket in a way other than designed and a NAVY one at that! With the USMC tartan I think that would be a faux pas.
