Cheap good quality kilt.
I am looking for a cheaper yet still good quality kilt. I am please with my Sport Kilt, I'm actually wearing it right now, but would like to up grade for daily wear and put this one on reserve in my hiking gear. I tried to get a kilt off of Heritage of Scotland once but after two weeks I had heard nothing about the item from them, order status, etc., I canceled the order and went with the Sport Kilt. I would like my next kilt to be one I can wear more formally if I want to. Price is kind of an issue since I am a college student. I freelance for the school newspaper but only get $10 a photo, so if I am lucky in a week I will make $40 or $50. Most of my other money goes into rent. Any ideas on an online shop? Or, in a few months I will be making a trip to Franklin, NC and if there is a store there which sells kilts I would appreciate knowing about it.

Corvidae,
Welcome to the forum. If a 24" length will work for you, you can't do better than Stillwater Kilts:
http://www.stillwaterkilts.com
The fellow who owns Stillwater is not only an X Marks advertiser, he is also one of us.
His Economy Kilts are only $44 (I have yet to try one of these but my friend Tim C. wears his Gordon economy a lot and it looks great.) I am very impressed by my $80 Stillwater Standard Hunting Mcleod (acrylic) and my Solid Black Stillwater Heavyweight (wool) , they were $145 now they are $122
If you are on a budget and you want to get the most for your money you can't go wrong with Stillwater.
Cheers

I'd say:
-For Modern-> Freedom Kilts does GREAT.
-For Traditional-> USA Kilts
Also, Still Water makes good bang for the buck, and have a HUGE following here.
A LOT depends on your budget and what you are willing to pay.
As for Franklin, I suppose you KNOW it is home to the Scottich Tartan Museum. Call and talk to them as to what is around there. Links are ALL OVER this sight.

I agree, that was hasty! I forgot to mention that by higher quality I kinda meant wool instead of the poly blend. Its nice in the woods but doesn't feel the way I want it too when I'm in class.

Your gonna be hard pressed to find a higher quality kilt for $40ish unless you luck out on ebay.

OR make them yourself from a good buy on fabric.
I'd use Barb's book.

Panache, what is the solid black Stillwater like? Is the "shadow tartan" visible? I don't like the look of the solid kilts, but already have one in the blackwatch tartan. If the pattern is easy to see then I will probably end up getting that one after the holidays. Otherwise I may set money aside for a while and try to get a 5 yard USAKilt .

I'd recommend the Stillwater wool. I only wear wool kilts, and for the money, Stillwater cannot be beat. Just click the "Heavyweight wool" section.
