New kilt approved!!
Over the weekend the wife and I stopped in the local kilt shop because we we're in the area. As we browsed tartan scarfs, and wool hats my wife asked if I was really planning to attend a friends wedding next April kilted. My wife has never been too thrilled with my kilt wearing. I explained to her that I had a long conversation with my soon to be married friend about his wedding, and that he wanted me to wear the kilt. At that my wife suggested I get fitted and order a kilt in an tartan to which I have a connection. My wife explained that she felt my kilt wearing was a little "fake" as I wear a SWK Nightstalker, and not a tartan that has some significance to us. She went on to say that she has noticed from strangers reactions that people like to see a man in a kilt, and that if I was to buy a new one she wouldn't mind my wearing it more often. As it is now I only wear my kilt when I'm out with the guys, at a highland games event, or on special occassions.
So, Friday (my next day off) I will be getting fitted, and making a deposit an 8yrd Hunting MacIntosh.

good on you Flair,
you got to love that feeling. Like the night before Christmas but for the long haul. I just got my NightStalker in the mail. Not sure which I will wear this friday....The Black Watch does have some Christmas color to it!
See you friday.

That's a good wife. It's like getting a long-term kitchen pass. buy her flowers.

I know there's alot of people will disagree with me here, but in a way, I agree with your wife. Or at least, I can see where she's coming from.
Now keep in mind I've not yet had any kilt-wearing experience. But to me, I would expect most people that see a guy in a kilt, they would expect that what they are wearing is in some way connected to them. This is evidenced by alot of posts you see here when the first question many are asked is "is that your family tartan?"
Part of the reason I think this is probably because it is my primary reason for wearing a kilt. I have a connection to it. I initially wanted to wear a kilt to my wedding because I'm of scottish descent. When I went to rent one and discovered that they only had some generic tartans available, I shelled out almost $900CDN to get a premium kilt made in my family's tartan. It was THAT important to me. That's really how this all got started.
Then when I started getting into it I started looking for other alternatives. I almost bought a Nightstalker from SWK .. but just didn't 'feel it' because it was a generic tartan that didn't really mean anything to me. Then, doing some digging I found out that the Black Watch tartan is also the Grant Hunting tartan - my fiancees family. Once I knew there was a connection, however remote, I went straight back to SWK and ordered one.
So for me, personally, I would only wear kilts that I am connected to at least in some way. It's a way for me to show my heritage, and with the different family connections I've found, I have lots of kilt options.
Now don't get me wrong - I dont think everyone has to have a connection to wear a kilt. Quite the opposite really - I think you should wear whatever you want to. Everyone has different reasons for wearing kilts, and they are all just as good as mine.
So, I'm guessing your wife probably just has the same perspective as I do. She feels it makes sense to wear something like a kilt when it is connected to you personally, but not so much so when it isn't.
At any rate, congrats on getting your kitchen-pass, and your new kilt!

Actually you're wrong, but good reply. My wife is Japanese, and she has seen a number of people in Japan wearing traditional Japanese clothing in ways which were incorrect. She felt that if one wear traditional clothing that they should do it it a traditional manner. She said she would feel sorry for the people who wore those clothes in that way, and I got the feeling from he that most Japanese felt that way too, but were too polite to say anything. To her, the tartan I selected was of less importance that the fact that I wear a traditionally made, wool kilt. That I have an association to a clan is really just the icing on the cake in this case.
And yes, she'll be getting flower every week for a long time.
